Berwick V Workington (27 August) 7pm

Recommended Posts

After Workington's last couple of away performances its scarcely any wonder that no-one came, particularly given that this was a challenge match.

I looked at coming up as I am going to Newcastle today but given the above chose the NL Pairs instead (which was, ironically, rained off).

You didn't miss much.

The banner was on the fence outside the sports centre. agree about a couple of strange decisions from the referee in particularly with riders jumping starts. Another strange decision was to let Ricky Wells go off 15m in Ht15, good as he is he was never going to catch and overtake either Doolan or Jorgensen, surely Adam Roynon from the tapes would've been better especially as Wells seemed to give up after one lap only to be gifted his point after Vissing fell.

Think you mean ht 13 we were saying the same thing about Roynon poor crowd Liam definately rider of night for me the ref should go to spec savers

Your right, though IMO Wells was lucky to be in the rerun of Ht15 as it looked like he rode his teammate Campton out to the fence.

Poor crowd and to be honest can't say I saw any Comets fans in attendance. As regards promoting the meeting not sure if the banners were up. I went to tourist information on Friday to ask if they could advertise the meeting on the state of art message boards wasn't over town yesterday so not sure if they were able to do it. The meeting itself a couple of decent heats and a couple of as already mentioned strange decisions by the referee. Failure to qualify at Rye House tomorrow and it's going to be another quick finish to the season. Good to see Seb in attendance last night.

I've been having a look at those notice boards for the past couple of weeks and wondered if the speedway was ever going to get a mention. I've seen Berwick Rangers matches, coffee mornings, charity events and even a roller disco in the sports centre, but not the speedway. Yet again it looks like it has been up the supporters to take action and get something done. And yet there is surprise at the small crowds. The apathy from the promotion is amazing.

I think the Sky meeting was on one of those electronic boards just through the Scots Gates, so I think it would've been on the rest of them.

Promoters promote, supporters support.

If anybody on here is going to the meeting next weekend would be great if they could inform everyone on here what happens thanks

Do you mean the meeting arranged for the Black and Gold, if so entry is by donation, there will be news on the training track out at Duns and you`ll get your supper.

Poor crowd, poor atmosphere, poor racing, on the plus side it's a trophy and the biggest cheer of the night going to Seb Aldén, how badly Berwick have missed him. Seems a lot going on behind the scenes that the fans are mushrooms being kept in the dark, the air of uncertainty once again surrounds us.

He did exactly that , wiped Campton out completely

Judging by the number of posts regarding Berwick's off track activities I reckon this meeting must have been as poor as the odd post or two have described it, clearly read's like there wasn't an awful lot of anything to write home about?

Two trophies in one season, this has to go do as one of our most successful seasons ever :-)

I would love to be a fly on the wall of the Workington pits tonight. First there was the handbags between Hansen and Roynon, then Wells putting Campton into the fence in heat 15, winning Berwick the trophy (Workington were on a 5-1 at the time and were on course for a one point aggregate win) and never bothering about his team mate coming round after. Vissing (who I think has a brilliant racing style, made for Berwick) was totally put off after his first ride.

Liam Carr had to be rider of the night. His ride to hold off Kenneth Hansen was the race of the night.

Hate to be negative but tonight there were some very bad signs tonight. I know this was effectively a challenge match, but it was a nice night weather wise, it is a Bank Holiday weekend, Berwick town centre is full of tourists, but the crowd tonight was poor and it was a very flat atmosphere early on. Again, if you went over to the town centre this afternoon, you would have no idea that there was a speedway meeting tonight. One thing about the promoters who came on board this season, they attracted a load of new sponsors in the programme and corporate. You get the impression that now they have left, the actual promoting of meetings will be back to zero.

Very nasty looking accident in the NJL meeting, hope the young lad is okay. Nice moment after the final race of the NJL match though, the Workington rider's reaction to winning the race, how much it meant to him.

Couple of years ago I was sat in a pub in Kings Lynn . Again a small town full of tourists . There was somebody in a car with a loud hailer informing the shoppers and passers by and tourists about the Kings Lynn v Leicester speedway meeting going on that night . That kind of thing doesn't take a lot of effort .

There was allot of inconsistency in the track last night. Grippy in bend one and two and slick in three and four which caught allot of riders out last night including home riders. Comets unlucky in bad refereeing decisions and with a few comings off throughout the night but over the two legs Berwick win the trophy back. Roll on next season to get it back.

There are lots of things you can do to raise awareness, there are free electronic signs in Berwick town centre, you can hire market stalls on a Saturday afternoon quite cheaply, you could give away a couple of free tickets on local radio, you could hand out leaflets (discounted?), none of which are done here.

I look on with envy at the likes of Glasgow (okay, dealing with a much bigger budget probably, but there are ways of doing similar things on the cheap) and you hear of the big efforts made by the Isle of Wight promotion, which are paying dividends. That could happen at Berwick, where we are in a fortunate position that we do not have a lot of alternative sports to compete with in the town. But unfortunately there seems to be little interest in promoting the sport and it suffers as a rresult.

Interesting to hear what 'bad decisions' you think Workington suffered from.

To be honest this is an argument we`ve had before, when meetings are promoted properly, Sky, FIM meetings etc, the club is rewarded with a decent crowd, there`s a lesson there somewhere.

My beef for the night was not the speedway itself, but the presentations

WE HAVE A BRITISH 250cc CHAMPION LEON FLINT

Why was he not interviewed properly, this young lad has a achieved a lot this season and deserves the accolade he has striven to achieve/

Oh ! and by the way his name is LEON I repeat LEON, not Liam.

Really? Sure you're not just making some of this up and that both the things highlighted already happen?

As for having no alternative sports to compete with - have you ever been at Berwick station when Newcastle United are at home and seen how many people leave town to watch their sport.

Leaflets/posters are displayed in between 70 and 100 pubs and local businesses in the town.

No-one is saying that there isn't more that can be done, to say nothing is happening is, to say the least, untrue.
