lucifer sam
HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions host Workington Comets at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday evening (6.30pm), with promoter Rob Godfrey stating: “We’d like the same level of entertainment on show as in recent home meetings, but with the right result this time!” Even by its own very high standards, the Eddie Wright Raceway has staged some epic speedway meetings in 2016. Bolstered by the signings of Michael Palm Toft and Lewis Kerr in their middle order, Scorpions have proved much more competitive than earlier in the season. But recent results have been frustrating, with the agony of last-heat home defeats against Edinburgh (44-45) and Somerset (43-47). Scunthorpe’s last victory came away at Peterborough on July 12. Godfrey says: “No-one has gone home from the Eddie Wright Raceway feeling short-changed in terms of the racing on display, because the action has been top-notch. “But there’s such a massive difference in mood, between if you win a meeting or lose it. Wins bring smiles to the faces. We’ve been so close against Edinburgh and Somerset, without getting over the line. “I’ve looked at our remaining four home meetings this season, and I honestly believe we can win them all. And if we do that, I think it will haul us off the bottom of the league. We’ve now got the really hard home meetings out of the way. That’s not to say that we will take any of the visiting four teams for granted – we’ve still got a job to do.” Scorpions are due to be at full strength, despite being in the wars at Ipswich last Thursday. Ryan Douglas withdrew from the meeting at Foxhall Heath after damaging his wrist in his opening outing, while Josh Bailey continued on the night with an ankle injury, but was subsequently ruled out of action last weekend. Godfrey explains: “Josh would have normally withdrawn with the knock to his ankle. “But with Ryan out, he knew that we would have been left short in some races if we lost a reserve too, so he bravely soldiered on and completed the meeting. “We had fallers over all the place at Ipswich, because it was one of those nights, so it was a relief none of the knocks to our lads were that serious.” Godfrey also believes that recent signing Austrian Fritz Wallner now has a real chance to kick on for the rest of the season. “It’s never easy coming over to a new country halfway through the season but Fritz has shown a lot of promise”, says Godfrey. “The fan reaction to his home debut against Somerset was very positive. “He had a fairly hectic spell of three meetings in five days for us at Scunthorpe, Somerset and Ipswich, during which he would have learnt a lot about British Speedway and the way that the tracks are prepared over here. “He’s now had the chance to head back home, pick up some different equipment, and I believe he now has a real opportunity to make a name for himself in the closing weeks of the season.” There are 24 heats of action in total on Sunday, with a nine-race second half consisting of a six-heat Midland Development League challenge match between Scunthorpe and Carmarthen, and the vintage bikes of yesteryear in three ‘Blast From The Past’ races. Admission prices for Sunday: Adult: £15.00 Student/OAP: £13.00 Child (10 – 17): £5.00 Child (0 – 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Family Ticket £35 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-17) Match Programme: £1.00 Expected teams for Sunday: Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. Josh Auty, 2. Michael Palm Toft, 3. Lewis Kerr, 4. Fritz Wallner, 5. Ryan Douglas, 6. Carl Wilkinson, 7. Josh Bailey. Workington Comets: 1. Ricky Wells, 2. Mason Campton, 3. Kenneth Hansen, 4. thebaron
Looking forward to the meeting after a week off. Reading in the Star that Lewis Kerr is enjoying his racing at the EWR and has an eye on a return in 2017 !. That's great news as I see it; no harm in getting your ducks in order early !. Rob is right; had we started with this 1-7 the season might have worked out better. But you make decisions for the right reasons at the time. If you take the long term view that we are building now for 2017 that makes the remainder of our season important for everyone. A team that had the Kerr-minator and MPT as its middle order would look strong. Then having invested the time in Josh Bailey you want to be getting the payback in 2017 and to be fair Fritz Wallner is worth persevering with. Then your looking at the heat leaders Josh Auty has already signed and Ryan's certain to. So it would leave one place and for me I would bring back Tommy Jorgensen. I reckon that line up has entertainment written right through it and can be challenging at the opposite and of the table next season. So I'm not writing off this season as I see at a springboard to the next. Let's see if we can put the Comets into orbit tomorrow and grab the points ! lucifer sam
R/R for Lewis Kerr - who is missing through illness. No issues with the weather. The forecasted rain did not arrive yesterday, and forecast for today is good. All the best Rob
IronScorpion
With Kerr now missing, that weakens us a bit after he's hit a rich vein of form. Ryan, MPT & reserves to take his rides. Watch out for the backlash after the comets hammering by Ipswich on Thursday. If Big Josh, Ryan & Little Josh are over their little niggles of illness & injury this could go down to the wire(heats 13 & 15 again). TheScotsman
Surely Worky must be in with a good chance of taking the win?
Guest Scunny2012
Without Lewis Kerr this will be another close meeting hopefully Josh Auty and Ryan Douglas can get back to form, especially Ryan who and I could be wrong on this (i'm never right at home) hasn't won a race since his individual win at the fours, but whoever win's i'm sure the racing will be as close and exciting as it always is

IronScorpion
Auty already announced for 2017. Douglas, from what I remember with all the visa fiasco, was signed on a 3 year deal so has another one remaining. Lyager & Wallner might, also, come into the equation somewhere, especially if the latter can get a CMA this year After the last few seasons though, we are still losing meetings in the big ht13 & 15 so a big hitter is preferred although IF the main heat leaders plus 1 2nd string & reserve score decent points, the meetings should be, almost, won before the last 3 heats. Difficult decisions for Rob but the "new entertainment/bar area" might bring in some much needed income.
scaramanga
Surely Worky must be in with a good chance of taking the win? if only workington have a good team on paper but unfortunatly they only seam to perform any way near what they should on home shale we just seam to fall apart away from derwent park
TheScotsman
But Scunny is a racers' track so must be your best chance?
allthegearbutnaeidea
Why does Scunny fans think every year TJ is going to come back? He's happy at Berwick

scaramanga
afraid so but why? we have some good riders we were strong in the fours so why are we so bad as a team away
Albert
Not a classic... but a welcome win... with some great racing from the Scorps. Scorpions just too good today. Few highlights...The Auty/Douglas 5-1 in heat 13 will live long in the memory, sublime passing from the pair of them... Fritz Wallner winning a race and continuing his progress was also great to see. Worky had a day to forget... Wells didn't look interested at times... and where was the real Kenneth Hansen?... the main resistance coming from Vissing and Jensen... The rest were average at best. Lord Lucan
Another poor performance on the road again, just never gets any better? I think the Comets have effectively given up trying to win away from home and are just looking to end another miserable season ASAP, only two league matches left away from DP at Newky and P,boro so, no joy likely there, if we can get a full house of home wins our efforts this season will be a mirror image of last year, 12 wins at home and one draw and 11 losses away, effectively showing no improvement at all? Dont know what's happening, cant understand what's happened, it's a really decent looking team as usual on paper yet it just doesn't fire on the track for reasons known to neither man nor beast, something has to give as not even winning at home will guarantee support over any length of time, we need success in competition home and away because without it we have no future? June01
What was the reason for Roynon's original exclusion from heat 9 please? I know he was later excluded for missing the two minutes.
Albert
What was the reason for Roynon's original exclusion from heat 9 please? I know he was later excluded for missing the two minutes. Originally excluded under the two minute rule... He was then due to go off 15m in the second attempt but again failed the 2 min rule.
