keepturningleft
No, not speedway, the olympics. Even the supposedly greatest sporting spectacle on earth can't fill stadia. Amazing to see so many empty seats at many events.

Amazing to see so many empty seats at many events. Was told that the prices were extocionate for the main events, giving the average income of the locals.Maybe the tourists supporting the games are well down. Not much being said about it though ,it is a bit embarrassing for the Olympic organisers. Deano
I guess the fact Brazil is going through a tough recession and that flu virus type thingy really isn't helping. Then you hear reports of swimming water turning green!

steve roberts
Have to say that if the TV happens to be on and the Olympics appears it soon empties the living room!
The Voice Of Reason
Rio is hardly the safest place on the planet to visit at the moment (along with Zimbabwe). Around 3 weeks ago, I know of someone who was mugged at knifepoint (with his newly married Wife) on Copacabana Beach......at Midday! It's a great shame. Obviously these instances are going to happen in countries of high unemployment and an absolute derisory social security system. If you cannot eat, what are the other options for your family than to starve to death? And, when the monies from tourism (and most recently, the World Cup) only filter upwards into the pockets of a corrupt government and the richest, then instances such as this will only increase within society. Political rant over! Just to add, for balance, that Latin America is generally a beautiful, inspiring, very safe (and very cheap) place to visit - unreservedly recommended - particularly Chile, Bolivia, Peru and my beloved Argentina. bellevueace
All the scandals surrounding drug use also hasn't helped, I always watch the Olympics normally but this year cant be bothered as you don't know if what you are watching is legit. That air of suspicion has ruined it for me.

That air of suspicion has ruined it for me. Me too as I stated earlier. I think that some of the empty seats, at least, will be down to people with our point of view.
keepturningleft
As many events are £200 a seat, it isn't that surprising.......What's Speedway's excuse? I'm no expert on Brazil, but there must be a sizable proportion of the population who can afford those prices. I bet they had no trouble selling out the world cup final when it was held there a couple of years ago.
New Science
Just my view but apart from football the Brazilians are nowhere near as passionate and as keen on sport as the Brits. In London many were watching sports they knew little about just to be part of the Olympics and support the Brits, not so in Brazil. The main sessions of the athletics will probably be full but you have to worry for the prospective crowds at the paralympics which follow. Steve Shovlar
Can't believe bbc viewing figures a high. Watching some of it anchored by that truly dreadful Balding woman is enough to reach for the remote. Think there are many reasons including prices.No-one has put forward fans boycotting the games as a reason though apart from the lunatic fringe on here who don't go to anything anyway. http://www.cosmopolitan.com/lifestyle/news/a62491/rio-olympic-areas-are-empty/ http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/olympics/rio-2016-half-empty-stadiums-as-angry-fans-forced-to-miss-events-due-to-massive-queues-a7177106.html http://www.news.com.au/sport/olympics/rio-2016-olympics-plagued-by-empty-seats-at-major-venues/news-story/1023e94184000811b195c259feee31d9
Humphrey Appleby
It's also the middle of winter in Rio, and the weather has been awful for much of the past week. I remember when I went there, the weather at Copacabana wasn't much different to what you get at a British seaside town...

I strongly suspect, these days, that those corporate sponsors you talk about are far more important than the likes of you and me - even if they don't turn up. The Olympics is for the sponsors - not joe public.

Bruiser McHuge
The stands look pretty full to me now and the Olympics are my favourite sports event bar none...I'd take it over any speedway event any day of the week...I'm a massive speedway fan but definitely not a blinkered one who can't see the merits in any rival sports out there..
