norbold
Never mind the music, it looks like an absolutely brilliant book. I think everyone should buy a copy! Edited July 21, 2016 by norbold
racers and royals
Never mind the music, it looks like an absolutely brilliant book. I think everyone should be a copy! The author not only knows about speedway-he`s really clever as well- I believe he won £10,000 on the " tipping point " quiz show.
norbold
Incidentally, I see that video was posted on YouTube in 2012. This is the first time I have seen it. I never knew it even existed until I saw iris's post.
Joe Beevers
I went to a steam fair event recently and saw a tent filled of classic motorbikes and old speedway and grasstrack bikes including Sean Wilmotts old bike. Anyway, the point relating to this topic was also in this tent was a beautifully framed picture on the wall of the 1928 Crystal Palace team all in the team pose. It did look like another world in many respects.

Probably captioned by that bloke from Penge, who seems to get the year wrong on a lot of his picture posts!!!! I remember on the Wimbledon forum he was posting photos where the year was stated on the pic and still getting the year wrong Edited August 11, 2016 by iris123
Joe Beevers
That is a rather odd one. Now I am wondering if it said 29 or 38 but 99% sure it said 28. I am trying to remember the names on it now. Perhaps there was a Vic. Sorry but it was a while ago.
norbold
There was no Vic in the 1929 team; there was no team at all in 1938, but....there was a Vic in the 1939 team, Vic Weir. The rest of the team that year included Bob Lovell, Keith Harvey, Mick Mitchell, Ron Clarke, Les Trim, Ernie Pawson, Charlie Appleby and Charlie Challis if that helps. Joe Beevers
No perhaps their was no Vic than because I am positive it wasn't 1939 unless of course the photographer or picture had it dated wrong as had been said. I will go to a few more steam fairs and hopefully this picture will turn up in a marquis again with the lovely old Weslake and I will probably take a photo of it, if I see it again. Pretty sure it was 28 but have been wrong before and maybe again but hoping to prove it this time. norbold
It could well have been captioned 1928, Joe, but if it was the caption is definitely wrong.
Guest
By JOHN HYAM TWO war time speedway meetings took place at Crystal Palace in 1940, the last time racing took place there. On Easter Sunday, March 25, Arthur Atkinson (West Ham) won the Holiday Cup, heading Colin Watson (West Ham) and Keith Harvey (Norwich) in a top scorers final. The known points scorers (each had three qualifying rides) were: Harvey 9, Phil Bishop (West Ham) 7, Watson 7, Atkinson 6, Wally Lloyd (Harringay) 6. Other starters were Harold 'Tiger' Stevenson (West Ham) and Arch Windmill (Hackney). In heat two, Harvey set the meeting's fastest time and a new track record of 79.8 seconds. In the programme notes, spectators were advised: "In the event of an air raid warning, all visitors living within five minutes walk are advised to go home." They were also told that air raid shelters were provided "under the centre steps." On May 13, another Holiday Cup meeting was held. This was over 12 heats with two semi-finals and a final. The qualifying scorers were: Phil 'Tiger' Hart (Hackney) 9, Archie Windmill (Hackney) 8, Bill Longley (New Cross) 7, Ron Johnson (New Cross) 6, Mick Mitchell (Crystal Palace) 5, Charlie Page (Hackney) 5, Fred 'Friar' Tuck 5, Ken Brett (West Ham) 4, George Craig (Bristol) 4, Ron Howes (West Ham) 3, Bob Hall 2, George Gower (Crystal Palace) 2, Vic Weir (Norwich) 2, Les Trim (Crystal Palace) 1, Alex Gray (Wimbledon) 1, Keith Harvey (Crystal Palace) 0. FINAL: Hart, Windmill, Tuck, Johnson (no finish). Edited December 10, 2016 by Guest
norbold
The Whitsun meeting, held on 13 May, was won by Hackney’s Phil Hart but the biggest cheer of the night came when former Glaziers’ captain, Ron Johnson, took to the track. Unfortunately he was leading the final when he suffered a puncture and had to withdraw. This race, in which the second and third riders were Archie Windmill and Fred Tuck, was the last ever to be held at Crystal Palace as speedway did not resume there after the War though not for the want of trying as in 1948 and again in 1950 Croydon Speedways Ltd tried to get permission to stage speedway at the old track but each time local residents protested to the council about noise levels and the council refused permission. The old track has long since disappeared and the site of the old wooden stands is now covered by the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre Athletics Track grandstand. Guest
Crystal Palace speedway circa 1930. That crowd watching the racing is probably more than attends a UK Speedway GP these days! Edited March 4, 2017 by Guest
