Ice Speedway In Heerenveen, Netherlands In 2017

Recommended Posts

It looks like The Ice Rink Thialf, in Heerenveen, Netherlands will stage the Ice Speedway Gladiators evert in 2017.

Subject to an FIM inspection in August, the Motorclub Assen hope to stage Ice Racing on 31st March to 2nd April. They will stage the Roelof Thijs Bokaal on 31/3/17 and the Ice Speedway Gladiators on 1-2/4/17

Theres a press release here: http://www.ijsspeedway-assen.nl/en/nieuws/556-ijsspeedway-welkom-in-ijsstadion-thialf-in-heerenveen

You can see the Stadium here: http://www.netherlands-tourism.com/thialf-ice-arena-spend-day-ice/

If you've been to Inzell then the inside resembles the Max-Aicher-Arena, and with a capacity of 12,500 it looks a cracking venue.

If the FIM approve the track, then they will stage Ice Speedway from 2017 - 2019.

I worked there a few times in the 80s, sadly for ice hockey rather than speedway. Back then it was an impressive enough set-up for a small place like Heerenveen, even though the speed skating track was then in the open.

I remember the track being absolutely full of local schoolkids. Obviously it's moved on hugely since then and really looks the part.

The only disappointment is the remoteness of the place. Friesland isn't exactly the party capital of the Netherlands. At least Assen had the delightful town of Groningen nearby.

Still, with Assen gone it's great to know that the Dutch have found a good alternative.

By the way the local ice hockey team were called the Friesland Flyers, tricky enough to have to keep saying in commentary. Then the local haulage company sponsored them and they became the Freriks Friesland Flyers.

You try it  .

The frites speciaal were rather good, although it was three decades ago....

Does anyone know when the fixture list will be available for the world championship rounds?

They should be out in October time, but provisional dates I'm aware of are Berlin: March 5th/6th, Inzell (Team Final): March 11th/12 and Heerenveen: April 1st/2nd.

Traditionally, Krasnagorsk is around the last weekend in January/First weekend of February, and if the second round is in Togliatti, it will be a week later, with Almaty mid February.

Heerenveen is considered the Wembley of speed skating, hence the investment in the facilities in a small town.

Whilst the dates have not been confirmed, Travel Plus are already advertising a trip to Almaty from Thursday 9th - Tuesday 14th February 2017, which indicates the round will be 11th/12th February.

However none of the dates are confirmed by the FIM at this stage.

Please note this is the Provisional Calendar. Krasnagorsk is out as per DutchGrassTracks post, but I'm sure everyone who follows the sport will be surprised with Shadrinsk being the new venue on the Tour. It's in the Kurganskaya region and 2,000 Km East of Moscow. It's also home to the Torpedo Shadrinsk side.

There is very likely a mistake in the FIM calendar, as Heerenveen will be on 01-02 April. I think a new calendar will be send out today by the FIM.

I was in touch with their press officer, Erik this week, they will stage the Roelof Thijs meeting on 31/3, with the ISG 1/2 April. Obviously, a mistake on the provisional list then.
