I made one In woodwork at school . back in the days when I was young and very stupid and occasionally went to football . I was supposed to be making a bookrack . but secretly worked on the rattle . Watching young talent progress in these races as well as the rider of the night final and qualifying heats to go with it. At Belle Vue when I started there used to be 13 heats for the league match , 10 races in the second half , a 10 minute interval ... all completed by 2100 hrs with a 1900 hrs start. I used to like 14 heat matches, eight a-side teams (six team men, two reserves), then junior race. reserves race, three heats and a final for the six main team riders making 20 races in all. I haven't been to a speedway for twelve years now due to re-location. I wouldn't consider getting into my car to travel a distance to watch a meeting that didn'tt have at least twenty heats of action. Anything less is not value for money in my opinion. I was spoilt supporting Oxford and White City watching the Eastbourne and Peterborough kids in the second half plying their trade against the team members...or watching an emerging Michael Lee as a fifteen year old competing in demonstration races with Colin Richardson at Cowley...or the local Grass Trackers (including Julian Wigg) taking part in second half races...or the emergence of riders like Kevin Smart who started his career as a junior competing in second halves at Swindon before developing into a useful member of the Oxford team until injuries ultimately took its toll. I could go on! For those who say that many people didn't stay on to watch the second half that's fair enough. That was their prerogative. However some supporters preferred to get their 'fix' and indulge in a more relaxed atmosphere talking to their mates whilst watching the second half. You have hit the nail on the head, I enjoyed my speedway far more when I knew little about the rule book, or the various goings on. Does this Forum encourage people to go and watch speedway ? I think not. It seems that some posters spend all their time dissecting others posts, be it a sentence, or just a word, and going on and on with a pointless argument, and claiming they are right, when the other poster gets fed up arguing with them. Then you have the other posters, with thousands of posts to their name who consider themselves superior to those who post less often. You often wonder if they have any other life than on here.
