Things You Miss In Speedway...

How is that going to work when they are 2 leagues apart ?

That is my point, there is no need for them to be two leagues apart is there.

Cradley get just gates just as big as Wolves and would get even higher at a higher level. I know personally quite a few Cradley fans who don't go to NL racing but would return if they were in a higher league. They won't be the only ones.

However, it's easy money in the NL.

Just think how packed it would be for Wolves/Cradley clashes at Monmore, with it being the home circuit for both. Now THAT would be a meeting to be shown on Sky.

Rayleigh

Barrow (both), Boston, Bradford, Canterbury, Cradley Heath, Crewe, Edinburgh (Powderhall) Ellesmere Port, Exeter, Hackney, Halifax, Hull (both)

Rayleigh

Leicester (Blackbird Road), Long Eaton, Milton Keynes (both), Newport, Oxford, Paisley, Reading, Rochdale, Romford, Sunderland, Wetmouth, Wembley, White City, Wimbledon.

Okay - Crayford too

I'm sure I've missed a few.

Oh and, affordable speedway, tactical substitutes, World Finals, October BLRC at Belle Vue, test matches.

And.... Rayleigh.

Were there a lot of rain offs? :o:rofl:

The Kennet brothers, Brian Foote, Ted Hubbard, racing every week, Friday at 8 at Hackney, Rayleigh Saturday, Crayford Tuesday and those East Anglian clashes, Ipswich/Kings Lynn, Rayleigh versus Eastbourne and Dave Lanning, Canterbury and Johnnie Hoskins and the Witches turning up on mass at Rayleigh, Arthur Price, Sunderland and Bradford visiting Rayleigh, Ivan Miller beating Arthur Price, Terry Stone and the shiniest bikes in the league. Characters in speedway both promoters and riders.

Where did it all go wrong? I know people started to think it was a serious sport with no strange rules as television showed riders getting double points for beating an opponent, the same riders that they saw last week but riding for a different team to that shown the previous week and the use of a joker in the World Cup which made it a competitive sport thus leaving outsiders wondering if it was for real or a new cartoon series. Oh well.

Ah but had you watched Wednesday's speedway extravaganza on Sky , from God's country , you would have saw that happen twice for 5-1's :drink:

And two mighty fine displays of the long lost art they were.

Also as mentioned in an earlier post re TheFish shaking Fernando Garcia's hand after FG almost stuffed him. Proper racing with a little bit of over riding always makes for a spectacle as long as both parties understand the rules of the game

Well done, from a personal point of view I'd forgotten Powderhall and Paisley.

All dearly loved - okay, even Crayford

Were there a lot of rain offs? :o:rofl:

Be glad I didn't refer to Sinderland.

Forgot Berrington Lough and Coatbridge - how could I?

At the latter I remember Brian Collins doing everything to help the Rockets - even reminding them it was green light & go. Must have had a row with the Tigers  I seem to remember that every pane of glass in the end screens of Albion Rovers' main stand had been smashed.

Crowd noises

Having a track less than 20 miles away.

Test matches involving two teams of riders who represented the best of their country fighting for the pride of their nation.

....bored at work, so having a bit of a moment...feel free to add to the list....for me...

The smell of Castrol R

Individual Leathers

Monkey masks

Upright engines

Cutting tyres

Coming home plastered in dirt and not caring.

Standing up against safety fence only inches from riders.

Meaningful second halves

Golden Helmet

Race Jackets with a simple, clear large design that stands out.

Russian Touring teams.

Louder bikes

Deeper tracks

Less rain offs

Fans covered in badges, rosettes, and year bars down to their knees ;-) Although some bloke from Rye House was giving it a good go last week at Somerset :-)

Collecting autographs because it meant something back then.

Test matches against the USA

Exeter

Bradford

Hull

White City

Bristol

Weymouth

Newport

Cradley

Oxford

Reading

Halifax

Characters

Fisty cuffs and hand bags

Cheese and onion rolls from back straight of Blunsden.

Enough nostalgia for now.....

All the above plus:

Viking Heads

And, somewhat surprisingly, not knowing within hours (minutes) a result and the exctement / surprise discovering how your team or rider faired:

e.g. I never found out until the Monday morning that Mauger won World Championship again '79.

That said, I do like to know as much possible about any subject I'm interested in and appreciate being able to research quickly via the 'net, but still miss the anticipation of not knowing everything almost instantly.

If that makes any sense....

and team riding

Tom Perry did a great bit of team riding with reserve Jack Smith at the Storm v Birmingham match recently and that was National League level. The referee must have been that impressed he gave the 5-1 to Birmingham even though we thought Coventry's Mitchell Davey had split them on the line.

Thirteen heat matches with a full blown second half.

No, definitely don't miss that. Most fans left after the main match anyway so we'd be losing two heats if they went back to that idea.
