brianbuck
Birmingham City Council's Planning Committee will be considering the application to demolish Hall Green Stadium on Thursday of this week 23rd June. The "Save Hall Green" campaigners will be represented by Mr Stephen Rea the (now retired) General Manager of the stadium, who will be speaking against the application with the objective of having it declared a Community Asset. If he can achieve this, it would give the stadium at least another five years (the amount of time remaining on the current lease) and the chance to negotiate either a new lease or an extension to the existing one.
25yearfan
Fingers crossed for a positive outcome Brian! A profit making leisure facility should be cherished! It would also be more profit making if the Cradley Heathens were allowed to race there!
brianbuck
That's perfectly true - and if the stadium can be saved then I think it would certainly be worth making an enquiry. Hall Green is on the opposite side of the City to Perry Barr and although further away from the Black Country, it has a direct rail link from Cradley Heath taking only 30 minutes, and with a service of four trains an hour and with trains running back right until 11pm, so access for Heathens supporters would be a doddle with the stadium only a few minutes walk from Hall Green station. The noise issue would have to be overcome it is true - and that would be a major stumbling block - but not an unsurmountable one in my opinion. arthur cross
Certainly hope Hall Green remains a greyhound venue after Thursday's planning session. But surely the biggest obstacle for any speedway at Hall Green to overcome is finding anyone willing to invest the money in designing and laying a completely new shale track inside the greyhound's sand track at a venue whose owners clearly have the bulldozers on their ideal horizon. While appreciating the Brummies managed to introduce a new speedway track into the city's other GRA-run dog-track at Perry Barr a decade ago, that's the one GRA venue operated in conjunction with the local city council rather than on what was effectively a GRA-freehold (up to 2014 at Hall Green) or is now a GRA-leasehold basis (the last couple of years at Hall Green). brianbuck
Needless to say, the Chief Planning Officer at Birmingham City Council is recommending that the Planning Committee approve the application to demolish the stadium! Birmingham City Council as negative as ever - nothing changes!

Brummie Kev
Needless to say, the Chief Planning Officer at Birmingham City Council is recommending that the Planning Committee approve the application to demolish the stadium! Birmingham City Council as negative as ever - nothing changes! I'm really gutted to hear that Brian, it would a terrible decision to demolish the stadium. Shame on the council if they did. Only positive is we had a recommendation for refusal to allow speedway at Perry Barr yet here we are today. I hope some of the Councillors on the committee are sympathetic Edited June 22, 2016 by Brummie Kev
Brummie Kev
Just saw on the bham mail facebook page that plans to demolish Hall Green stadium and build 200 homes have been rejected by the planning committee. 9 voted against demolishing it and only 2 for. Overwhelming victory Edited June 23, 2016 by Brummie Kev

brianbuck
It beggars belief that after their planning committee had voted 9-2 in favour of rejecting the application to demolish the stadium, and having declared the venue to be a Community Asset, Birmingham City Council have now reversed this decision and have approved the plans to build 210 houses on the site. This is less than a month after the original decision of the planning committee! Is it any wonder that the general public have such a low opinion of politicians? The landowners of Hall Green Stadium can appeal against the refusal of their plans as many times as they like, but once they are approved, the "opposition" have no right of a counter-appeal! Just another example of how the system is weighted in favour of big business! Edited July 30, 2016 by BBuck
