longlivefrankie
Today would have been the tradional day the Internationale would be held at Wimbledon. I have particularly fond memories of these. I had relatives that lived near and through most of the late sixties and then the seventies attended. One particularly Whit Monday sticks in my mind where me and a bunch of friends in a VW camper van attended 3 meetings in one day (surely nearly impossible now) at reading (v Hackney) white city ( v hull) and the Wimbledon for the internationale I think it was 1976 not sure though. What memories have you of any bank holiday meetings?

Remember them well...although we, Oxford, never did very well in them! Never really liked the 3TT formula as for a third of the meeting your team wasn't involved! Good get together however.
Grachan
I loved those 3TT eveents. Maybe because I regularly attended all 3 tracks back in those days of speedway obsession. But to have meetings at Swindon, Oxford an Reading all over the weekend was great for me.

Sidney, you remember incorrectly. It was Oxford on Good Friday morning, Swindon on the Saturday evening and Reading on the Easter Monday morning. There weren't two meetings in a day for the 3TT. But the meetings did draw big crowds and were memorable. The Cheetahs normally flopped in the 3TT, because we had to let Swindon and Reading win something All the best Rob Edited May 30, 2016 by lucifer sam

As I said, we had to let you win something. We wanted the BL, KOC, LC and MC - so we let you win the Easter 3TT. I'm not even sure if there was a trophy for it A few years later, there was the Thames Valley Trophy, which was a mini-league between the three clubs rather than a 3TT. I think that was home and away on the same day. Oxford and Reading always tended to be home and away on the same day. Late May Bank Holiday for the League Cup, and August Bank Holiday for the British League. We won some and lost others of those, since Oxford and Reading were quite well matched, whereas Swindon were easy meat. Those were the days All the best Rob Edited May 31, 2016 by lucifer sam

steve roberts
Always the Internationale for me...never missed it as apart from the World Final it was the best meeting of the year. Never made the Internationale for some reason...second most important meeting to the World Final in its hey day. Used to enjoy the big individual meetings (most tracks held at least one invitation meeting a season) but I guess that in this day it wouldn't appeal...one only needs to look at the ELRC as an example of that! The BLRC was the last big meeting/showpiece event of the season (as well as the Second Division equivalent) A chance for fans from all tracks to get together at the end of the season. Steve, the modern-day PLRC at Sheffield still works well. Sadly, the ELRC has suffered due to rider withdrawals and not really having a proper home; it's nomadic. Hopefully this year's event at Brandon - possibly the last-ever at the track - will draw in a big crowd. All the best Rob

Sid - I thought that the signing of Per Sorensen was a master stroke and Oxford went on to dominate that season. If I recall there was even an article in one of the Daily Nationals which suggested that Oxford's team that year was the best ever (as the regulations allowed) during the BL era...remaining unbeaten during the BL campaign. Always remember Per scoring a maximum at Blunsdon on his return with Oxford. He must have been chuffed with that! I was particularly impressed with 'The Aces' side of 1972. Trouble is it's difficult to judge the best ever because different regulations determined how teams could be assembled under the varying points limits legislation etc. For example the Oxford team of 1986 competed during an era when teams had to declare a junior in their line up. At the end of the day one has to judge on results achieved during any particular season and 'The Cheetahs' remained unbeaten in British League matches in 1986 and would have swept the board if the weather had't intervened (although they were moral victors in my opinion!) steve roberts
My brother once attempted three meeting on a Bank Holiday. Ipswich in the morning, Rye House in the afternoon and Hackney the evening...I think that one of them was rained-off but can't remember which?
