Shale Searcher
If I remember correctly, in the 1970's, the start gate staff would infill the start line ruts.. That doesn't get done now....
Gresham
The general consensus seems that a concrete/tarmac starting grid would be a total non starter for various reasons given. However...does anyone think there is a way of giving all four riders an equal starting platform from which to gate? Leave it as it is...bring in better controlled rules to stop 'gardening' etc...any other thoughts?

Nothing wrong with gardening, fail to understand any issue regarding it. It never takes long, is generally done whilst the music at the start of the race is playing, announcer is stating who is in the race and building up the suspense. Would be boring as hell if they just came straight round, lined up and off they went. Anticipation is great. The starts are as fair as they have ever been in the sport.
keepturningleft
Question is why do they do the gardening at all. There is not a single solitary advantage to be gained by all this irritating, time wasting nonsense. Pretending to gain some scientific advantage fools no one, is nothing but 100% hokum, and it should be stopped.

A ORLOV
I thought it was quite funny when I think it was Tai picked up a spade to work on the start gate before his race.

I like you've brought that up.. After all, it was entertaining, somewhat controversial and created a talking point.. Something those who hark back to the old days say the sport is missing.. Yet funnily enough, the biggest moaners about that were precisely those people.
KIRKYLANE
For those of you that have not noticed , the double white line introduced this year has drastically improved the starts so far this year. Yes we still get some races pulled back ... but on much fewer occasions As for digging at the tapes it is still allowed as long as you are on your bike !!!!!!i
Alan_Jones
As for digging at the tapes it is still allowed as long as you are on your bike !!!!!!i Riders can still be off the bike as per the amendment made last year but it's now only allowed up to the expiry of the 2 minute allowance. BWitcher
Hooray. Look forward to the next stupid possibility. How about race jackets and riders in different leathers rather than team leathers as its easier to identify a team from a distance? Oh no... done that one... BWitcher
I could easily recognise riders in different leathers......but get your drift! For sure, most speedway fans knew who was who and it was far easier to identify individual riders. A large part of me preferred the individual leathers too... Vince
For team speedway I would really like whichever team is behind given the choice of gates 1 & 3 or 2 & 4. Then do away with tactical rides, tax subs or anything on those lines. Obviously tax subs are like tac subs but for Eu riders!!
tyretrax
I thought it was quite funny when I think it was Tai picked up a spade to work on the start gate before his race. It was a small shovel, for cleaning the greyhound crap from the parade ring.
Gresham
Hooray. Gresham
If so, you have good form. I know...Concrete grids and race jackets and different leathers were all introduced by Speedway promotors, then they decided to change it. Some good ideas...some bad...IMO. Things evolve. I suppose going through the 'Stupid ideas'....you sometimes stumble on better solutions. Some of the best ideas have led from crazy ideas...it's been an interesting debate non the less, and made for good discussion in places. Daniel Smith
How about this for an idea. Have a 2 minute clock with the rules the same as GP's, Tapes up on 0 or excluded. Have a 20 meter zone from the start line back towards the 4th turn. Rider's cannot enter this zone until there's 15 seconds on the clock. The 2 minutes is then used for practice starts, clutch adjustments etc. Time saved all round
