Recommended Posts

Just thought I would start thread.

With rain coming later in the day, hopefully beat the weather.

Kent will be looking to take nice lead into 2nd leg.

Hope for safe meeting and good racing.

The result should be the proverbial walkover for Kent Kings. So far as IoW are concerned, they remind me very much of the NL3 1947 season Wombwell side who were probably one of the worst-ever teams to grace the sport in the immediate post-war seasons. Who said "history does not repeat itself"?

Very very harsh to compare IOW with Wombwell ? :nono:

Meeting started very slow for Kent (1-5) but soon got going and won comfortable in the end.

Bit weird there was no announcements at the beginning and when it did work was not very loud (sort it out Kings).

IOW have riders Compton,Smart,Baseby and Cockle who are capable of winning races.

Real problem is very weak reserves.

Ayres is such a trier, winner and crowd pleaser.

Shanes not a great meeting, but not for the want of trying (track proved difficult to pass on ).

Surely Kent will go very close to silverware this season. :D

Did you stop watching in 1947 and start again this season by any chance?

Early in the meeting there were signs that IOW would put up a decent fight and to be fair the final score did not reflect the quality of racing on display. For the most part the Islanders had their gating gloves on and made Kent work for the points but as the meeting progressed a succession of 5-1's put the Kings clear.

All the Kent side got stuck in barring Mason who looked like he had something better to do.

For the Warriors Cockle gave a good account of himself, Baseby was solid as ever around Central Park & Dugard looked useful at 2. Sadly the rest were found wanting as the meeting went on. A meeting which to be fair had its fair share of questionable refereeing decisions.

Great to see a good number of travelling Island supporters & fingers crossed i might be able to sneak over and catch a meeting at Smallbrook before the season is out.

What was Compton like? Surely he he's ever going to ride like a number 1 then it'd be round Central Park.

He rode a cracking heat 1 where he gated and never looked like being caught by Bowen. Then it was a silly fall in his next running wide on bends 3/4 where he should have known better.

Shanes tucked him and Dugard up a treat with a brilliant cut back on the first corner after they both tried to run him wide in his third ride and from memory he retired whilst at the back in heat 13.

There are certainly signs that he could be a true number 1 but he drifted in an out of the meeting and Cockle looked the biggest threat to the Kent heat leaders.

No offence to Dugard who rode well but "in my opinion" a better option for IOW would have been to retain Perks & bring in Aaron Baseby creating a strength in depth 1-5 rather than gamble on Compton..........
