Carmarthen Dragons Return!

Recommended Posts

Great news that Carmarthen Dragons are back on track for 2016.

Lawrence Fielding, Garry Evans and his wife Lesley came up with the idea and after speaking with the Meakins family have taken the Dragons name on.

Plans are to promote interest in 2016 by running the Dragons in away meetings, while the group secure a home track.

Planned meetings are:

May 13 Exeter v Carmarthen (@Somerset)

June 18 Stoke v Carmarthen

July 14 Kings Lynn v Carmarthen

August 14 Newcastle v Carmarthen

August 28 Mildenhall v Carmarthen

Buxton away TBA

Good luck to Lawrence, Garry and Lesley with their plan, it will be great to see the Dragons jacket riding again.

If anyone can sponsor the boy's or help with fuel and oil costs, please message me.

The way things are going, soon we will have more teams without a home base than that actually do have one. No wonder serious senior sports journalists who I have dealings with "smile knowingly" whenever I mention speedway to them.

or maybe they smile knowingly that you're a knob

Far from it Steve Hone. They even ask me "...so you think speedway will last another five years..." And they also ask me my opinion on other sports because they add "...I would hate to get this matter wrong but know YOU will have a reliable answer..." :icon_smile_clown:

Some have even made the comment "...speedway is not a real sport though...!"

give people a chance with speedway instead of knocking them, and stick to your 4 wheeled fun.

your 'reliable answer' about other sports is likely to be "I don't know about that, but I went to New Cross in 1936"

You are nearly right about attending New Cross Steve Hone - it was 1946. And there was probably a bigger crowd for that meeting than today's GP attracted. And I think the track where you are based photography-wise has 4 wheeled fun. Have you ever been?

Other sports for me - besides league football, there has been rugby league, rugby union, international athletics, ice hockey, professional tennis, big circuit car and motorcycle racing among them.

...and there's F1 stock car racing at Belle Vue on Bank Holiday Monday. Peterborough's Truckfest is not actually competitive-type racing is it?

Serious sports journalists are constantly mocking the likes of the German football Bundesliga, Italian Football Serie A, American NFL and NBA to name but a few because teams don't have a stadium of their own....How right you are!

That's interesting/ Do they play every match at a different venue - or what? I would like to know how 'home' fixtures are arranged and would much appreciate a sample offering - say for the Bundesliga clubs.

No. The clubs I was referring to just share home venues with other clubs, like Cradley do in speedway's National League.

If you are purely talking about clubs that don't compete in professional league competitions and have no permanent home venue then that's pretty irrelevant to the thoughts of serious sports journalists, is it not?

There are no professional league speedway clubs that have no permanent home venue, but I'm sure that there are lots of amateur football, basketball, baseball, rugby, etc clubs that move around different venues.

That's the old place surely - so utterly irrelevant here.

I think you've perhaps misheard them - "so you think you will last another five years ? " is probably what they are saying, no doubt wondering why the hell you're still wittering on about speedway from the 40s.

Great news about Carmarthen.

Thank you HenryW for an informative response. I appreciate it very much indeed.

It would be great to see a team in South Wales again;

Hope it works out and in particular that you have the Council on your side,

Thanks Kirky and the others for their support.

I hope that the council work with the guys as they try to bring speedway back to Wales.

It was shut in 2004, partly due I understand from the Meakins' being advised that the land was needed for other uses, 12 years along, the track is still visible in parts, with nothing built on it...

Good luck to the management and team for 2016, I hope that people turn out to see the new look Dragons in the fixtures that I've mentioned.

Because the reason Speedway is on its backside is because people are trying to re-open defunct tracks, yeah it's definitely that...

Exactly....little steps....restart the team for 2016 is hopefully only the first step before a base is found for 2017 home meetings with any luck.
