Do we?

Can you let me know of any other GP riders with serious ambitions of winning the World Title who ride in another country the night before a GP?

I'm not disagreeing with you that its ideal, far far from it. its one round of the GP calender. I seriously don't believe it will cost him the title. Bearing in mind, he has no british dates, I would of thought, just one big effort, one day of the year . Travelling miles is an everyday part of life to a speedway rider. I would understand more if it was a league fixture, but the british final, I would assume,

is slightly more appetising.

In the 1940s riders were sometimes involved in matches at New Cross on a Wednesday, then went into a World Final at Wembley the next night. I don't recall any finalists complaining about this in those days?

Of course it could cost, 1 bad GP can cost you the world title, its terrible planning and anyone who actually wants to be the best would do the same

Recall Martin Ashby being 'persuaded' by Wally Mawdsley to miss the practice session for the 1968 World Final (Ullevi) to ride a club meeting at Oxford. He worked on his bike thru' the night and then caught the charter plane from Luton the following day.

You didn't answer my question, I asked if you could name me another rider with serious ambitions of winning the World Title would do it?

Let's put it this way.

Could you see Denmark scheduling a Danish Championship round the night before a GP expecting Iversen and Pedersen to ride in it?

That is my point, yet you liked the post that is 'hardly the same comparison'.

Chris Harris has ridden in a league meet I believe the night before a GP... again, hardly a major contender.

I think that was his point. Martin was one of those riders who was just too mild mannered to become a real World star despite having the ability.

Two! He was a member of the Great Britain Team that won the WTC in 1968 and 1975.

As you well know I am referring to individual World Titles.

So did you ever see him ride Cretin ? No you just see the rubbishey stuff in the crappy nineties they pi....d off to Portugal you have no guile or respect a total p...,!

Here we go, Sidney has arrived to turn the thread into nonsensical abuse.

The answer is zero Sidney.

Yes I did realise that...just adding a bit of light hearted banter!

However your question was 'How many world titles did he win?' The question is irrelevant as, with the benefit of hindsight, he never won the Individual Championship...however he qualified for the 1968 Final presumably hoping to win (his 1968 average was an impressive 10.72)?

As much as I hate to admit it being an Oxford supporter Martin was a very classy act! Although my first hero 'Cassius' Middleton often had the beating of Briggo he always seemed to come unstuck when up against 'Crash!' Martin's inside moves on the pits bend at Blunsden were superb and he has left me with many memories!
