Hey, Would agree with you on that one, Chris, even though the numbers dont match uo with Daves, he sort of had the natural gift and fit a bike really well, no disrespect to Dave. Remember in the early days, his brother, Dave Morton was better but for the injuries. Ivan saw it coming, and was singing the praises of Chris back in 75, as the better of the two. Thanks.. Sandman

Chris Morton is my favourite all-time rider, so I've just got to agree with what's been said so far.

His World Final record is shocking for a rider of his talent, but anyone who ever saw him stick his neck out for Belle Vue and England knows what a brilliant rider he was.

Martin Ashby and Bob Kilby at Swindon. Martin was true quality and a brilliant team man while Killer's gating had to be seen to be believed at times.

One rider from the same era who rarely gets a mention due to his lack of success at World Championship level is Dag Lovaas, who I remember being absolutely sensational at Oxford in 1975.

Tommy Jansson? Or if some remember Bettsy would always get max after max at the first half of every season and then fade as the Rounds progressed. Which is why, for a time, Mauger said he was the best rider to never have won a World Final. Of course there was John Louis, and it makes you wonder where his carrer would have ended had he started Speedway before the age of 29. Probably will never be duplicated.

OK Zetters, close but since you are obviously Swede, you could be biased. But to throw a bit of flavour into the mix, probably the one man who is evergreen and leaves all behind is..... Ice Racing Twice World Champ, 25 consequetive World Finals and still a threat at 54... Per Olov Serinius. Top that :!:

  • 1 year later...

Billy Sanders was my idol in the 70's and early 80's

But being a Poole lass there are so many that graced our team over those years, Mike Caruso (spelling) Scott Autrey, Danny Kennedy, Ron Preston, Christer Sjosten,Michael Lee and then obviously JD and Middlo.

Moving towards the late 80's and early 90's you would be hard pushed to find any better team riding pair than David Biles and Kevin Smith, they were a dream to watch at Poole!

Agree with those that mentioned Tommy Jansson and with Grachan`s choice of Martin Ashby, but would also say, in London at least Barry Thomas was great.Don`t know how he went on the northern tracks though
