Berwick V Edinburgh (league Cup) Saturday 16th April

Recommended Posts

Edinburgh's John Campbell is quoted (in club press release) as saying:

“We need to win tonight (Friday, against Glasgow) and ensure the Tigers do not pick up a point and then we must secure all four points at Berwick tomorrow".

Fighting talk from the tall bald one!

The Monarchs do have a good record at Shielfield Park however, and Saturday should be Berwick's hardest home-track test so far.

From the Olympus Marquees Bandits own media briefing, Kevin Doolan says:

"It's Edinburgh, after all. We have to take the threat of them coming here to wreak revenge very seriously indeed -- but with these fans of ours, waving flags and big foam fingers galore, I'm hoping we can see them off and maintain our very real intention of progression to the semi-finals".

Bandits: 1. Thomas Jorgensen, 2. Theo Pijper, 3. Kevin Doolan (captain), 4. Anders Mellgren, 5. Seb Alden, 6. Matty Wethers, 7. Liam Carr.

Monarchs: 1. Sam Masters (captain), 2. Erick Riss, 3. Kevin Wolbert, 4. Jye Etheridge, 5. Ryan Fisher, 6. Max Clegg, 7. Dan Bewley.

Interesting Edinburgh have switched Etheridge to number 4. Will this be to match up against Mellgren, who has been Berwick's weak link so far this season? Despite being weaker than in previous years, I'm still expecting a very tough meeting on Saturday, with Masters and Fisher especially being very good around Shielfield and Riss, Wolbert and Clegg all having good meetings last season down here.

Looking forward to seeing Dan Bewley as well. Obviously going to be a bit raw at this stage of his career, but there are good reviews about him.

This is possibly Berwick's best chance yet to progress in the League Cup.

Making my way to this on sat. Reading good things about Berwick this season and having witnessed it last friday they also have a decent team.

I would be happy if we managed to keep the score close but of course a wee away win for us would be nice.

Got the mother in law visiting this weekend so please weather gods ensure this stays on

If mellgren fires on Saturday night this could back fire on Edinburgh

This will be a though fixture , we've already seen how much "Flying Ryan " likes Shielfield could be a potential banana skin if we're not on top form . The result up there will mean nothing if we don't win this one , a win for Edinburgh vs Glasgow on Friday could see the Bandits in pole position in this section away wins are vital so we can afford any slips

Anders Thrown a sickie ,badnits. stronger and should win by at least 10

Lets hope Mellgren gets better soon as is back in the team asap and Berwick can get back to seven riders.

In his absence this certainly makes Berwick stronger.

From this morning's e-newsletter:

ANDERS OUT
We regret to report that our popular Swede Anders Mellgren has been declared unfit to race for up to a month.

As we are aware, Anders has been battling a knee injury, sustained in a fall at a training track in Cumbria the day before our opening match of the season at Redcar..

He has attempted to ride through a barrier of considerable pain since then, but a further knock this week has made the difficulty of trying to race impossible.

He has returned to Sweden for medical treatment and assessment of the ligament damage..

The club has received a medical report and certificate from the clinic in Sweden, which has been lodged, duly translated, with the BSPA office at Rugby.

While we await further medical reports, your Olympic Marquees Bandits will operate the rider-replacement facility in both League Cup matches this weekend.

Anders's four programmed races may be taken by Theo Pijper, Matty Wethers and Liam Carr.
