2016, Rain-offs, Postponements, Abandonedments, Are There Other Reasons, Not The Weather?

Recommended Posts

Forecasting the weather is very much hit & miss as different websites have differing forecasts. On Monday, for example, rain was expected pm & it duly came then clearing, delaying the start of the meeting

(see pictures on updates http://speedwayupdates.proboards.com/thread/15473/scunthorpe-newcastle-plkoc-02-2016?page=1&scrollTo=294115 )

After a 30min delay the 150cc British Championship Round got underway of 7 races after which the PLKOC match started where riders & fans were not covered in wet shale but dust

(see pictures on Scunthorpe Speedway http://scunthorpescorpions.co/?p=5407 )

If riders, promotions & fans have travelled then give it a chance, if possible.

Having a great promoter, draining track & track curators can make it possible.

Exactly IronScorpion....

When Leicester were PL, we turned up at Scunny on a Friday night, it lobbed it down and the turns were 6 inches deep in water!! No chance given, but they sucked the water off the bends, graded and we started.!! This would only have happened at maybe 1 or 2 other UK tracks, Leicester Kings Lynn, mostly EL riders don't want the colours to run in there kevlars!!!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, we're well into May now and the rain-offs continue with some gusto, something wrong with this..

It just seems like it's not worth planning a speedway night out if there's even a sniff of rain anywhere near the track, not only on raceday, but 48 hours before!!!!!!!

Bloody ridiculous!!

Looks like round and round we go.....I would suggest this is the main reason for early call offs in the first place as when an attempt is made to get a wet meeting on there's nobody there to watch it barring the real hardcore.

Headlines screaming from the Daily Express says heatwave forecast for the summer, if it's in the Express must be correct.

The lack of attendees is because nobody trusts the promotions/riders to complete the full meeting!!

The old chestnut "let's get to ht 10 and call it" syndrome...

There are loads of fans on here that have said that they won't go speedway now if theres been any/or a sniff of rain anywhere near the track on race day/night...... No confidence..

That was the beauty of speedway.. A drop of rain to a heavy track from race day rain, gave riders different track conditions, meant you had to ride the bike differently, more throttle and balance control....

Now, tracks slick as a board, no shale (to speak of) bikes like rocket ships, the skill has gone... Fastest bike, wins.

Suddenly you've gone from being a decent poster to a very bitter sounding poster.. Must be a reason.. :o

But he has a real real point have a rethink.!

Does he. Who pays the bills when nobody turns up to watch riders trying to just get round, falling off and times 6 seconds more than normal, and fans moaning about the quality of racing.

There should be a sensible middle ground solution, but some would still have their moans.

The use of the word “beauty” is questionable, while advocating what you see as value for money you are saying the “beauty” of the sport was fans being short changed watching meetings in substandard conditions.

For all the meetings ran in rain where riders adapt there are as many (probably more) that were turgid with guys struggling to get the bikes around the track, if there has been a stance to put a stop to that this season, that’s good (although I doubt there has been a massive chance of thought re running meetings in rain), some meetings run on Sky in particular sold the sport short rather than showcasing the actual beauty of it.

It should always be about putting on the best show though rather than just putting on a meeting. I would also say that rider safety is paramount and that as a stance has probably changed massively over the years, you could send them out on slower bikes etc now but if the track isn't seen as safe I doubt riders will want to race, more power to them. It also tends to be ignored/forgotten that often it doesn't matter re rocket ships or not it is visibility that causes the bigger problem than shale, dirt on tracks.

All that being said though this thread appears to have been an attempt to write a narrative when really there is a pretty simple two word answer which Gemini has said, the weather.
