The Original Elite League Draft Riders (where Are They Now)

Recommended Posts

Had a look through the original draft riders who start the season of 2014 just wondering how they had progressed and where they are now.

Belle Vue

Stefan Nielsen; Still a draft rider, and Premier League

Ben Reade; Retired.

Birmingham

Simon Lambert; Riding in the Premier League turning down the opportunity to ride as a draft rider.

Paul Starke; Still a draft ride. and Premier League

Coventry

Jason Garrity; Now riding in the main body of the Coventry team.

James Sarjeant; Still a draft rider, and Premier League

Eastbourne

Lewis Blackbird; Retired.

Dan Halsey; Riding National League.

Kings Lynn;

Lewis Kerr; Still a draft rider, and Premier League

Lewis Rose; Still a draft rider, and Premier League

Lakeside

Adam Ellis; Still a draft rider.

Ben Morley; Riding Premier League and National League

Leicester

Tom Perry; Riding Premier and National League.

Max Clegg; Still a draft rider. Riding Premier and National League.

Poole

Kyle Newman; Still a draft rider. Riding Premier League

Lee Smart; Riding National League.

Swindon

Steve Worrall; Still a draft rider, and Premier League

Darryl Ritchings; Riding Premier and National League.

Wolverhampton

Ashley Morris; Riding National League.

Joe Jacobs; Still a draft rider.

From 20 riders

1 rider has made into main body of an Elite League.

10 riders still form part of the draft.

6 riders are riding in lower leagues

2 riders have retired

Would this be counted as progress?

with these results your assuming that ALL the riders have ridden to there best , and not taken team orders to keep average down , to remain a draft rider

Given that no Draft riders have been forced to move up, despite a number averaging more than many heat leaders, I struggle to see on what basis you would suggest this?

Whether or not the FTR system has been a success or not would depend on the question and who was asking it as there are so many caveats to the question “progress?” If it is being judged on the riders who were originally included than it indefinitely has.

The thing with listing riders from a few years ago is that it creates a natural regression of thought that they are as good now as they were at that time, more so as it is skewed with “still racing PL”.

I would suggest Worrall, Kerr, Garrity and Starke have all been an absolute success in terms of progress, all are indefinably better than they were when this begun and actually have a decent crack at becoming something. I appreciate some might argue natural progress might have dictated that anyway, possibly so, but x amount of EL meetings on top of their schedule and the time spent around better riders will have accelerated progress.

Others have met “success” via different criteria Lambert, Sarjeant and Morley have resuscitated their careers and will all hold their own in the PL this season.

Clegg, Perry, Ellis, Rose and Nielsen remain young riders, with Ellis looking like he could push into the Worrall, Kerr and Co group

The remainders are the kind of excess you will find when you introduce a large batch of talent, some won’t make it and some will but it is about the success.

The draft system has worked to an extent it has helped create more British riders, the other issues that have spawned from it such as race format, weak top 5s and irregularities in the system are the fault of different aspects that have went against the initial intention which was a good one.

given that they've used converted pl averages this year, is it not conceivable to keep that average down ......

This year though, their averages might take them into the main body, so it might be better to return to this at the end of the season.

quite ridiculous when you think about it, the reserves will have inflated averages , not a true figure riding against reserves in most races

Well yes. But your statement was they kept their averagea down to remain as Draft riders. But clearly no riders were forced to move up from the Draft, regardless of how well they did in El or Pl?

the draft list has been based on performances, be it pl , or el and riders went up or down depending on performance , therefore this has been used since its inception as to where to class riders in either tier 1 or tier 2

therefore this list is based on performance........if you look at the listings you would see kyle newman probably the top rider in the draft is at number 6 ....

You'll never know if its been a success or not. For all you know without the draft half a dozen may have retired, a few more dropped back to the NL. But equally a couple may have found themselves into an EL 1-5 by now. It's impossible to decide if it's worked or not.

All I know is that no riders career seems to have been messed up after as promising start but a couple of lesser riders do seem to have made a go of it. Paul Starke had been around a while but since the draft started has come on massively.

And part the reason Joe Jacobs is only a draft rider is because no PL team signed him last year (yet weirdly hes back this year despite having no PL team!)

In 2014 a lot of those riders shouldn't have been anywhere near the EL, now most of the ones that are still in the EL as reserves are at a standard where they can compete at least. Good to see that we are still enforcing two draft riders in each team but they are able to move into the main body of their EL side.

The future needs to see this continue and a proper draft for both reserves put in place in the Premier League.

£25 a point is still a lot less than the 'top boys' will be on.

Yeh! But when the league was formed it was meant for development of young riders basically expenses and little points money now we have a lot of failed PL riders taking most of the money out the league. If he money is not in the sport why are they paying money we can't afford in all divisions.
