Redcar V Newcastle - Thursday 31st March (challenge)

Recommended Posts

Another meeting where I am not sure what to expect.

Was definitely some positive signs last week, and we did look better than I anticipated. Albeit, Berwick were without there number 1 though.

A bit of a patched up Diamonds side this Thursday, as Kings Lynn are at home to Belle Vue on the same night. Stuart Robson will guest for Robert Lambert and Liam Carr comes in for Lewis Rose. I think Theo Pijper will also be guesting for the injured Tero Aarnio?

Bears should lineup in the same order as last week. Will go for another close meeting, Bears by 4!

Theo's average way higher than Tero's. So he must be guesting for Steve Worrall, I'd guess?

That will mean if Tero is out injured with an R/R in for him and Steve, Lewis and Robert are all riding in the King's Lynn V Belle Vue meeting that night the Diamond will have 4 changes from the weekend.

I can only assume the King's Lynn fixture was arranged after this one. But even if it was, surely this fixture should have been re-arranged. The Diamonds turning up with 3 riders missing (probably now 4) doesn't do the sport any good at all. No wonder attendances are on the decline.

The sport is a joke as far as a serious Competition,I would be p&ssed off if I was a Newcastle fan a good team on paper but will hardly ever see that team on track at the one meeting.

In some respects, I feel for sorry for Redcar, in this instance, as the Newcastle team may well put off fans from travelling down the A19 for this one, keeping their money for the League Cup match in just two weeks time.

Put me off.

I was going to come but why go to a challenge in which one team has 3 or 4 riders missing when I can go to Sheffield for a league cup match instead ?

Is there anyone going to this meeting who would be able to text updates to the Updates site? We are looking for a new redcar texter for this season, so if you can help out at any point this season, can you please send me a private message remembering to include your mobile phone number. I'm updating this meeting in particular tomorrow.

Many thanks

I fully agree with your comments, speedway is a mess. This isn't a go at Newcastle, it's about the sport of speedway, the sport I've loved and supported for many, many years. Speedway is fast loosing it's appeal for me, I'm at the crossroads, do I go on supporting it, or do I call it a day? To be honest I attend more because of the banter with the lads, more than the actual racing. And to be honest, the prospect of going into the second meeting of the season with only three of the team line up - well says it all doesn't it. Your team is your team, and you support them through thick and thin, that's how you build up loyalty. Not some hoch pot of riders thrown together to make up the numbers - and this could be a regular thing so I'm led to believe!

It does seem that Newcastle (and some other clubs) will face a significant number of this season's matches with riders missing.

This is a result of these promotions choosing to staff the side with some riders who will have over-riding other-league commitments, and is perhaps likely to affect the overall performance of what are on paper very good-looking squads.

The authorities' slipping-in of the regulation authorising guests instead of plain r/r for otherwise-engaged British riders has encouraged PL clubs to create a monster for themselves and their fans, with some looking as though their teams will be staffed by a revolving-door policy of guests.

Too much priority has been given to EL clubs by these rulings, with the PL once again being totally-screwed by the 'big league'.

Time now to step away, run their own affairs again, divorced from the EL overlords?

I accept that it's a difficult one for promoters as there clearly aren't enough available riders - hence riders doubling up/down is probably a necessary evil. A combination of the GP, plus Polish and Swedish leagues now running on multiple race days makes it even worse.

The EL teams face a continued struggle in putting teams together and given that backdrop it's hardly surprising they have insisted they have priority in the use of their own assets.

As a result its imperative that the British clubs work better together to compile a fixture list that ensures teams are at full strength as often as possible. I just can't understand why tonight's fixture is going ahead, it shouldn't be allowed to happen. Speedway promoters need to realise that peeople simply won't pay money to watch matches where guests and rider replacement are heavily used. It's almost the exception rather than the rule to see two teams tracking 7 riders each.

Hard to see what the solution is but it can't continue. Is running a meeting every week really viable nowadays? Is it time to consider home matches on alternative weeks? Running every other week would presumably cut costs and give promoters more flexibility when arranging/re-arranging fixtures.

I can't see how the PL is being screwed by the EL. Newcastle chose to borrow several riders from EL clubs. Surely they have screwed themselves.

I still think the rule should be adjusted, so that if the rider belongs to the EL club he is riding for, then that EL club has priority. If he belongs to another EL club, rather than the one he's currently riding for, then the PL team should get priority.

The EL want it both ways, that's what is 'screwing' the PL.

How do the PL want it both ways? It's simple, owned by EL club then ride EL. Owned by PL club then ride PL. What you want is for the PL to have it both ways.
