Lions v Tigers Match Preview

The speedway season opens on Saturday with the visit of the Sheffield Tigers to the Beaumont Park Stadium to race against the Paul Chapman & Sons Lions in an Inter-League Challenge fixture which gets underway at 1.00 pm.

The team will be led out by new captain Nicolai Klindt and he forms an opening partnership with fellow countryman Patrick Hougaard. Grzegorz Walasek and Szymon Wozniak line-up in the same positions in the side as last season and newcomer Sebastian Ulamek takes over the number five berth. With Josh Auty returning that makes five riders who have worn the red and yellow colours before. Josh is partnered by new signing Paul Starke who was an integral part of Pooles Elite League Championship winning side last year.

Sheffield, who reached the play-offs last season have once again assembled a strong team and with three former Leicester riders in their side there will be plenty of interest for fans. The Tigers though will be missing their captain and top scorer Simon Stead who was injured whilst competing in a meeting at Kings Lynn last Saturday. In his place the visitors have named Josh Grajczonek as a guest replacement.

Re-shaping of the third and fourth bends of the circuit to create more overtaking opportunities on this area of the track has recently been completed. Both Nicolai Klindt and Szymon Wozniak have already practised at Leicester and alterations have reduced the measurement from 317 metres to 302 per lap which means a new track record will be established in the opening heat on Saturday.

Teams

Leicester: 1. Patrick Hougaard, 2. Nicolai Klindt, 3. Grzegorz Walasek, 4. Szymon Wozniak, 5. Sebastian Ulamek, 6. Josh Auty and 7. Paul Starke

Sheffield: 1. Josh Grajczonek, 2. Dimitri Berge, 3. Kyle Howarth, 4. Josh Bates, 5. Jason Garrity, 6. Richard Hall and 7. Nathan Greaves

Be interested to hear how the new track rides compared to last year.

The racing was pretty much the same as I remembered it 3 years ago when I last visited Leicester in the Premier League with gating and the first corner of utmost importance. Only a couple of passes without rider error with Howarth rounding Ulamek on bend 3 and 4 in heat 3 and Klindt rounding Bates on the backstraight in heat 9.

Apart from Garrity and a couple of exceptions with Hally, we were completely outgated, I'm sure if we'd had Steady we'd have got more than 40.

Crowd was very low, and there were a good few from Sheffield there. I guess £18 for a practice match on a Saturday lunchtime isn't the way to go.

Anyway good workout for the Tigers before the important business starts at Scunny next weekend.

So once again an abysmal EL team gives a decent enough PL a thrashing but you can guarantee that PL fans will be claiming the gaps between the two leagues isn't that big soon!

Surely even you can understand that it's about how PL teams match up against PL teams, not EL. One day even the most deliberately obtuse will realise it's about close competition, not absolute strength. I'd rather watch two closely matched PL sides rather than the dying fiasco that is EL.

I couldn't give a dam about the relative difference in strengths between the two leagues. That is totally irrelevant.

Anyway, enjoy watching Poole run away with the title and hope you still have 8 tracks willing and able to prolong the farce in 2017. It's looking doubtful!

Apologies for anyone I may offend, but I'm actually going to be positive about the meeting!

Firstly, I was expecting to have to pay full price. But this year they've introduced a student ticket, so I saved 11.50 and was very pleasantly surprised! Been a long time coming, but they've done it.

Secondly, the track changes are very apparent. Think they did make a change to the racing, a couple of cut backs and moves round the outside showing a few racing lines.

Thought houggard was impressive and ulamek got dialled in quickly. Garrity very impressive for the Tigers. Don't think it was gate and go (but it is popular to accuse Leicester of that).

Greaves was a little bit out of his depth but I was impressed. He gated well. Wasn't ever ridiculously far behind the rest, especially impressed with him laying the bike down in a split second to avoid hall after a fall.

The track shop at Leicester has more variety and better value for money following the new management.

The crowd was actually a fair size, for a pre season challenge and considering the more lucrative option of the belle vue opening meeting!

Youve just argued a totally different point. Well done.

The point I made was that some PL fans claim the difference between the EL and PL is getting close. It's not. It's still massive.

You don't need to lecture me about the mid-matched EL.

You beat me to it.

As usual, standard result which proves even the weakest of top flights is way stronger than the PL. Standard.

What a surprise. RMC missing the point entirely.

The track showed a few different lines today. The riders will take a few meeting to learn the quick way round.

The shale was only laid last Sunday. We spent all day Saturday drying it out. I put down 80 tons on turns 3/4.

I finished it at 2 they were riding on it at 4 will no problems.

More shale to go down for next week as we build the banking up on 3/4.

Yesterday at Scunthorpe in Premier League Cup.

Auty rode at number 1 for Scunthorpe

Klindt rode at number 2 for Scunthorpe

Today at Leicester in a Challenge match

Auty rode at number 1 for Leicester

Klindt rode at number 2 for Leicester

think we all need to thank Glyn for preparing the racing circuit.....................think they could have done with his experience at belle vue by the sound of it!

If you've got time can you nip up to Belle Vue and sort their mess of a track out Glyn? You seem to have made a better job of Leicester than they have managed.

To be fair to Belle Vue they were up against it with the weather, it was only last Friday the 11th we had heavy snow here. I am only 5 miles from the track.

I know Colin has worked very hard to try and get it on.

It one of those things we (track men) all have different ways of doing things.

I never stop learning in what you can and can't do with shale. I know 100% you can't lay wet shale and rolling it only makes it worse.

The base has to be firm and dry. Thats why I spent all day drying it out and I took 20 ton of muddy shale off. Then the next day laid the new shale.

Even then I was drying that out as it was a bit damp.
