Coventry's New Stadium

Recommended Posts

Its a shame that the Motor Sport Industry can't pull together and give speedway a helping hand. The main problem facing the building of any new track is the noise nuisance. Most motor racing tracks that I have attended have vast areas of land that would suite a speedway track and the noise issue would be less of a problem (subject to allowable race days). I know its not just round the corner but there is Mallory Park and Donington Park that both have ample space, the later positioned next door to an airport (what noise issues?).

Just a thought!

Both Mallory and Donington have noise issues. In the case of Mallory the local authority had to compensate residents in 2014 for breaches.

Don't think there are many race tracks without noise problems

Agree, just look at the noise problems that Mildenhall have had despite USA bombers taking off next door.

I watched the first "Drive" programme last night which was filmed at Brandon. Admittedly I have not been to Brandon in 46 years and remember it as a first class venue. From watching last night it did seem to have become run down, so a new stadium should be welcome. I hope I am not being too harsh on Coventry or offending Bees fans, as Brandon was always one of my favourite venues in the 60's.

A must for me is 'Dogs allowed'. If they are banned because there are a few Sheep in the next field then that's me done for. Anyway, being pessimistic I can't see a new stadium being built anywhere in Coventry but I wait to be proved wrong.

You might have difficulties with Buxton then - I've seen a sheep inside the stadium during a match!

This claim always makes me laugh. As run down and shabby as Brandon now is, it still one of the best speedway stadia in the UK. How many are genuinely better? And if you think Leicester, Redcar, Somerset or Scunthorpe are better then you're mad and frankly, that all Coventry will be getting.

totally agree, definitely an aged stadium, but facilities way above the norm in british speedway

Maybe it should be compulsory to have kennels overlooking the track for all these dogs that love speedway.

Kennels? :o She's never been in kennels in her life. She doesn't love Speedway either unless it's on TV. Strange dog ~ all she wants to do is go to sleep on her blanket when it's 'live' but goes mad when it's on the television.

Shame it didn't happen whenever we've been there as that would have kept Lucy awake.

dont go by what you se on tv, if you aint been there for 46 years then you should go and see for yourself and make your own mind up properly , cuz it aint that bad, as far as speedway stadia go its above average ....

Would there even have been a back straight 'grandstand' 46 years ago? I wasn't a Coventry fan back then so never noticed on my visits when the Lions were riding there.

The covered stand has been there since at least 1967 ,when I joined the back straight Mob ,

I took this photo in 1960 so it must have been built around the middle of that decade then. People say it's run down now but it doesn't look too posh back then ~ look at the state of that grass.

The main straight grandstand was also a green, wooden unit at that time. When the "Dave Clark Five Bits and Pieces" was played over the tannoy everybody was asked to stop stamping their feet in time with it, as flakes of paint and wood were dropping off the ceiling in the understand bar and the management were afraid serious damage could result! Not long afterwards Charles Ochiltree oversaw the installation of the main grandstand as it is now in stages over two close seasons. The first two sections were done together along the main straight the first year and the pits end portion was set at an angle to the first unit to follow the first bend and added afterwards. At the time it was said to hold 500 in each of the three sections. The hangars behind the stand had some sort of protected status and have remained unchanged.
