The guardian is asking for recollections of Walthamstow greyhound Stadium at

Maybe they need to be reminded that it wasn't just dogs at the stadium.

.

I've sent in an action shot from 1950.

Lets all do likewise.

Just sent off a speedway photo for them.

I never got to see speedway at Walthamstow - before my time! However, I did get to know the outside of the stadium quite well as our school sports ground was nearby and in the winter we set off from there to go cross country running. The course took us round the outside of the stadium!

Saw the movie "An Education" with Carey Mulligan-a recent British movie- and this cool guy takes the sexy schoolgirl to Walthamstow dogs-great view of the track and the art deco entrance. Wish I'd thought of that venue for a date but sadly not to be-good movie by the way with excellent acting!!

A few years ago I saw an extract from a speedway related film made in the 1950s at this track. The clue was the two conical roofed mini towers behind one of the bends.

That was probably There Is Another Sun (aka Wall Of Death) a 1951 film starring Maxwell Reed, Laurence Harvey and Leslie Dwyer (later Mr Partridge in Hi-De-Hi). There are some good speedway action shots and also some good ones of the stadium.

The Renown DVD is available and it was on Talking Pictures channel only last week.

Thanks Hot Shoe. Will look out for that. From memory i can think of Britannia From Billingsgate filmed i believe at Clapton.in the early 30s (a gem) and one at Hackney in the 70s besides Swagman at New Cross in the 40s .Any others?

An abandoned Staines Stadium (which briefly held speedway in the late 1950s) is featured in the 1964 film Seance On A Wet Afternoon although there is no speedway action in the film. The stadium was i think demolished the following year (1965) having held the last stock car race 5 years earlier.
