ch958
it could be argued that the PL is actually a little too strong; there is a much greater gap between NL and PL than between PL and EL and that has stifled the progress of many riders in my opinion. There are far too many riders in the PL who should be in the EL but i understand the arguments as to why they are there (earnings, etc).

Answers on a postcard I think the question should be "whatever happened to the once strong EL?" seeing as most of the EL is full of PL riders.

Pinny
Which PL rider do you wish you had signed? Michael Coles. Wish we had signed him in 2000 as a replacement for one of Wato/Smart when they went EL and to Swindon respectively. He always rode Newport well. We did however sign him in 2005 (ish) but was well, well past his sell by date then. Adam Sheilds is another - was quality in the PL for the IOW and heard he was in talks one season with Tim Stone. Sadly never happened. Had your team been EL who would have been your Number One? Would of loved Jason Crump, his father was once a Wasp and JC was generally outstanding in the EL. Who would have most likely been your Number One? Probably David Howe  Most Exciting signing at PL Level? Got to be Frank Smart, his first season with us he was pretty wild and inconsistent due to poor machinery but after his drugs ban, he had superb machinery off Mallett and was exciting as well as a powerful scorer. Used to pass top riders for fun around QM. Whatever happened to the once strong PL? Same as the rest of British Speedway - its fallen on its arse! Pinny
thank you pinny for the reply... interesting you chose coles, boss back in the day He was always quality at Newport, not many were a threat to Watson and Henriksson in the 99 season. But he was, he was superb. He guested for us many times that season. As did Neville Tatum. What ever happened to him?!

topsoil
cookie @ workington I was judging it on the silverware they've won with him at the helm. Workington must regret letting him go. What were the circumstances? Obviously a fallout somewhere along the line?
Django
Cookie and previous owner Keith Denham had disagreements. Cookie and Rich Lawson didn't (and still don't) get on and Lawson was supposedly the better bet. Wrong decision but hindsight is a wonderful thing. topsoil
Cookie and previous owner Keith Denham had disagreements. Cookie and Rich Lawson didn't (and still don't) get on and Lawson was supposedly the better bet. Wrong decision but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Cheers. I did read in the Speedway Star there had been some sort of a fallout, but that was as far as it went. The piece also said he had tried to sign for a number of clubs, he mentioned Newcastle specifically, but none had wanted to sign him. Bet they are regretting that now. I can remember thinking at the time that it was strange that Workington were letting him go, him being a local lad and an obvious talent.
