Keeping Speedway Tracks Raceable During Bad Weather? Thoughts....?

Recommended Posts

So, this subject rears its head regularly on this forum, in one guise or another... Is there a definitive answer, without the use of covers.. Does the lack of oil dropped on the track in the older days make a difference? Would different tyres make a difference? Or is the major issue rider visibility? Is that a problem that could be lessened? Using a different surface material? Is there one available? How many fans have been lost due to rain-Offs/Heat 10 debacles?

Your thoughts gentlemen??

I believe 'wet weather' tyres are being trialled, personally I can't see how they'd work as they don't address the problem of spray (neither did dirt deflectors to the extent hoped for). Track surfaces are a possibility but you would need something widely available and affordable. Rain-offs are definitely bad news, especially when people have spent a lot of time and money to get there, only to be told at the last minute.

Anyone any ideas on the visibility issues..? Better goggles, better roll-Offs, or a step back to clear plastic rectangles held on with bulldog type clips? In the 70's I remember some riders using multiple layers held on with clips, each clip had a clean piece, it was ejected by small levers which were flicked with the clutch hand, bit like roll -offs, but they had clear air between, so no smear contamination....

I have always wondered why no-one has experimernted with shell grip , thats the surface before pedestrian crossings and at traffic lights where the traffic has to stop from high speed , its an anti skid surface , it has a similar surface to well prepared shale track ,the brip is unaffected by water and It could be laid on boards and a totally portable speedway track is a reality

I read somewhere ( I think it was in Classic Speedwáy) that in Ivan Maugers farewell meeting at Belle Vue which was run in November the rode with full length mudguards over the rear wheel and had no visibility problems with spray. Can anyone gem ember or comment on that ?

It wasn't raining at that meeting and most of the guards broke off in the early races never to be refitted, so not sure that they would have made much difference.

The meeting is on youtube if you want to see it.

What happens if the front end goes up, are they designed to accommodate that?

I was there. Like others have said, it was very cold but not wet. The guards kept snapping off. Don't think anyone finished the meeting with a guard intact.
