Grand Central
I know I don't say this often, but that makes sense John And I join you in this very pleasant but unexpected place of agreeing entirely with gustix. I believe the result of the European Final Qualifier on July 7 at Vaxjo makes its abundantly clear how correct this seems http://edinburghspeedway.blogspot.co.uk/2015/08/1957-european-final.html
lucifer sam
I have an opinion in regard to the 1957 World Final reserves. Jack Biggs and Brian Crutcher were the two reserve riders for the actual World Final meeting. The European qualifiers came through from their own stages of the championship. Rolf Westerberg was probably the next highest points scorer from this stage. Had one of the European qualifiers been unable to compete PRIOR to the final, his place would then have been taken by Westerberg. The Europeans did not take a reserve rider to the actual World Final. However, should one of the European qualifiers been injured during the final and unable to continue, one of the meeting reserves - Biggs or Crutcher - would have replaced him. That would make sense. Does anyone have the result of the 1957 European Final? All the best Rob And I join you in this very pleasant but unexpected place of agreeing entirely with gustix. The 1957 final consisted of: defending champion Ove Fundin (seeded to final), top 5 from European Final, top 5 each from two British semi-finals. Crutcher and Geran finished sixth in the two British semi-finals and I assume they would have replaced any injured rider from "their" semi-finals. So three reserves, but the two reserves on the day were the 'locals' rather than the non-UK based European rider. Has a certain logic to it. All the best Rob There were always local reserves for the World Final - in this case Brian Crutcher and Jack Biggs. The European scenario was different - there was no direct reserve qualifying place from their final. Rolf Westerberg was a reserve (or next qualifier in line direct to the World Final) should one of the original qualifiers be injured. Anybody know how tall a rider Westerberg was???(sorry Norbold)!! Odd but intriguing question BOBBATH - why? Edited December 17, 2015 by Guest
BOBBATH
Gustix my friend, ages ago there was a thread re "who was the tallest speedway rider ever"-this degenerated rapidly into the absurd and became a long running joke at my expense-partly because I mistakenly pressed my answer as Graham Miles multiple times in error( sort of like the guy who pressed 9 instead of 0 for Brian Elliotts' one World Final appearance!!!!!)-so for a while if I posted anything somebody would work into the answer something along the lines of maybe he was the tallest ever rider. Periodically it resurfaces -and I have just been guilty of it (yet again)!! Sorry for lowering the tone of discourse on this website once more!!! Many mea culpas!!
