Isle Of Wight Wightlink Warriors 2016

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I will do my best to answer the above points.

macca56 = Yes, regular race night is going to be Thursday's, and thank you for pointing out it is missing from the home page. It is a good point to get it on there so will be looking into that a little later today along with timings etc.

With regards the logos, much feedback has come in and many discussions have taken place on many platforms, all points considered though the decision on the logos has been made so they will be sticking around. Although, I will change my avatar picture if it annoys you that much! ;)

7/8 man teams and warriors. Personally I love the fact that a number 8 has been signed. It helps the team in many many ways, and would love to see more clubs add an 8th rider, so in answer to your statement yes I believe the 8 warriors was on the cards from the start due to this.

Just to explain a little about the difference between the media channel (Portal) and a website.

The Portal is not solely a website, it also has other avenues it is tied with such as the add-on (app) etc, so it is constructed to work with those, not as a stand alone website project. The portal mainly delivers visual media first and foremost so yes it has a website, but the website plays only a part in the portal framework.

In the Warriors channel under "Island Attractions", you will find videos, not text/times/explanations/directions etc. The attractions section should be included within the channel, but in the video aspect, therefore allowing the websites to include the written information. The Portal reach viewers that websites and to be honest current speedway media avenues don't hit, so to show that the Island is a great place with lots going on etc may entice travelers? I do agree and it is in the plans to have this section also in the website with text and pictures etc.

The Portal does not replace websites, more aimed to compliment not only adding what is missing, but getting it "out there" to a wider audience. And not just for the Warriors, for all teams/riders/sponsors/countries etc.

Andy :)

Thanks for the feedback and explanations Mr Hague. (I appreciate the Portal is a separate entity from the Club web-site, but just felt that the web-site could do with the inclusion of some of the content that appears to feature on the Portal only at present as, IMO, most visitors to the Island would most likely search for info on the web-site first and possibly only look there. I do agree that the Portal capture a different audience and may entice people to travel, also the visual media is improving and I thought the video that was produced for the meeting before Christmas was excellent. Agreed about the No. 8 too, although as Kent Kings have found, it is difficult to recruit and keep one.)

As regards the logo, please don't change your avatar - certainly not on our account and not to a self portrait - just kidding.

All the best with everything.

I can remember when the field behind the back straight was always full of cars!

Yep...remember those days well Islander.

Roy out in the road, directing traffic and selling ice creams to those stuck in the traffic jam.....that he had caused!!...and cricket balls being hit through car windscreens in the overflow carpark in the field you mention.

Good days indeed.

From a consumer's point of view I think that's a brilliant pricing structure and is clearly aimed at being affordable to everyone so I hope people take advantage of the club's generosity and it doesn't turn into being too cheap! :t: I wonder if the Warriors will be the only club offering reductions to service personnel and the disabled, plus as a student it's beneficial to see not just any price reduction, but a significant price reduction for students, as far too many places nowadays expect us to pay the exact same full adult price as someone in full-time employment!

The Wightlink Warriors will open the 2016 season with the Vince Mapley Memorial Trophy meeting. The meeting will celebrate the life of Vince who was a member of Team Warrior until he unfortunately passed away at the stadium whilst helping the team at Smallbrook.

The season's opener will take place on Thursday April 7th and will include all 8 of the Warriors in the individual meeting and they will be joined by a further 4 riders. The trophy will be contested over 16 heats and with other surprises coming along it's sure to be a great meeting. As it's the season opener it is bound to be a night full of pride for everyone who has helped in the return of speedway to Smallbrook.

Warriors Skipper Brendan Johnson said "Over the years of racing at the island, Vince was always a top guy, from helping me unload my race van to just being there for a chat if you needed it. He was a a true gentleman, so for our season opener to be in his honour is great and I will be trying to win it with pride. I would like to thank each and every member of Team Warrior, our sponsors and the promotion for getting the Warriors back on track in 2016."

Warriors v Falcons v Wildcats v The Saints
The second meeting of the season for the Warriors looks to be an absolute cracker with a 4TT between Isle of Wight, Exeter, Weymouth and Southampton on April 14th. The meeting will see all 8 Warriors joined by another 8 riders to make 4 teams of 4. Warriors will be split amongst the 4 teams, with riders representing teams closest to where they live or have previously been associated with.
Commercial Director Barry Bishop said, "This is going to be a fantastic meeting with 3 famous sides returning to the track at Smallbrook. We hope that if this meeting proves to be the success we think it will be, we can repeat it in the years to come. Personally, I cannot wait to watch this meeting and welcome our friends from Exeter, Weymouth and Southampton to Smallbrook."

Islander 15, glad you like the pricing structure. A lot of thought and discussions have gone into these figures to make sure that whilst it works for the club, the fans get the maximum benefit that can be passed on through the admission prices.

Countershaftcounter, I don't think it's an elephant in the room anymore as people have voiced their opinions on the logo both on this forum and other social media outlets. Opinions from all angles have been listened to and the decision has been made to go with this logo, so naturally it will feature on the clubs merchandise.

Would be great though to get your feedback on last nights 4 announcements on pricing/press day/first match and 4TT?

Many thanks

Andy

Can't fault the pricing structure, Andy, can only praise it and the Club appears to have set-up very well from Press, Practice & Party Day on 2nd, through the Individual meeting and the 4TT involving all 8 x Warriors. Hopefully the weather treats you well and all will be well attended, go off safely and attracts some ex, lapsed and new speedway supporters along with your old fan base.

It will be interesting to learn at what level the Wightlink Travel discount is set and the make up of mainlanders and islanders that attend your home meetings.

We've discussed the logo previously and one thing you can say is that from the Facebook page it appears to have got some kids involved, which can only be a good thing (by the way, love the clip of the human car impressions).

I think its a very good decision to try and get your team out for some competitive practice and all the home riders will benefit from the Vince Mapley Memorial individual (beautiful tribute btw) & the 4TT.

It will also give a rough idea of potential attendances for the season as it will be mostly IOW fans attending each event barring a few hardened Exeter supporters and those just delighted to see Smallbrook back.

That's a really good, well thought out set of admission costs. As I said some time ago, it is vital to make it affordable for a family on holiday to attend and £22 for two adults and their children (however many) hits the mark really well. Years ago, when the Islanders were in the premier league and it was a flat £20 for a family, there were many who thought it worth trying even if they had never attended speedway before. After being asked to do so, I spent one evening a couple of years ago explaining the basics as they happened to a family who had "just given it a try" and they were amazed to see the racing itself which they thought great but to also find that the scoring, team riding etc were also going on. Pointing out as a rider was chasing the dirt for an attempted cut back to pass or how a position was being defended meant that they could see the skill and the race developing. They were really grateful and said that they would never have realised so much was going on in a race without a bit of help. Sometimes us regulars take these things for granted but newcomers do not come equipped with experience or knowing what they are looking for! It might even be a good idea to put a basic article in the programme each week aimed at the newcomer (especially for those on holiday trying it for the first time) describing these things, even with a few diagrams to show the various racing lines, the starting procedure bonus points etc

I will look forward to attending again later in season when I am on the Island.
