Swindon Stadium

Recommended Posts

There never was a chance of a new stadium being built. Another venue lost to speedway. Five years on Poole V Belle Vue will be the only UK match in a very contracted elite league ( providing Poole have re-layed their track by that time ). They will race Home and Away on alternate weeks and fans elsewhere can watch speedway via Pay Per View.

Not whilst Clark Osborne is in charge!

But Gaming International have already purchased the £20k worth of cut and shut portacabins.

So Swindon has to be going ahead, oh, hang on............

A few grand losses against a few £100k housing profits, hmmmm

Not a few hundred thousand, a few million.

200 houses on the site of the "new" stadium, £100k profit per house, makes £20,000,000 profit.

Anyone who thinks they'll build a new stadium is living in cloud cuckoo land.

Is the council pro-, neutral or anti- Speedway ? Anyone know ?

If they are pro then why not form a supporters group and approach them for available/suitable land and put down a new track (note I say track not stadium at least not to start with) ? Why be so focused on a site that probably has had it (which is a real shame and I did used to go there, though as a neutral) ? Apologises if this suggestion seems naive to those in the know but if you want the Speedway to continue then surely the only way that is going to happen is if the fans (plus maybe the promoters and even the bspa) do something themselves.

Tin hat on standby.

The council are fairly pro in my opinion. They, and the local MP, make all the right noises, but at the end of the day, they cannot make a developer do something they don't want to do and there is a tremendous demand for housing in Swindon.

No tin hat required at all. You are on exactly the same wavelength as me. Using my example above, building houses on this land would return £20m in profits to the developers. Why not agree to back their change of plans for housing instead of a new stadium, in exchange for a small contribution towards a new track elsewhere. Say 20% of the profits?

I know some may say that the speedway club have no leverage to conduct such a deal, but I disagree. Take Oxford as an example. Risk Capital Partners/GRA/Cowley Property Investment Ltd have a multi-million pound white elephant on their hands which they cannot develop into housing (their preferred choice), cannot sell (without a significant loss) and don't want to run as a going concern. All thanks to fan power. I'm sure the developers at Swindon don't want to find themselves in a similar situation.

These are rather off-key queries on the face of it, but dependent on the response, I could make a follow up question.

(1) what is the average attendance at a Swindon meeting?

(2) how many of those attending are actual Swindon residents?

(3) how many attending Swindon live in the catchment area of the stadium?

(4) what are the opinions of those living in the stadium area who do not follow sports ventures at Blunsdon think of proposals for a new stadium?

(5) A 2011 gave the population of Swindon as 209, 156.

Varies between 1000-2500, average around 1400, falling annually. Dont know how many actually pay admission.

Would say most live outside Swindon, attract fans from up to 60 miles away, Southampton, Bristol, Bath, Basingstoke, Reading, Oxford, Gloucester, Cheltenham, south Wales etc., next nearest teams Somerset and Poole, over 70 miles away.

Most local people would not attend but most seem to be in favour of Speedway, even my muvver in law who lives in a care home a few hundred yards away.

Swindon population around 220000, has doubled in 50 years, when most people worked in the railway factories.Used to be Europe's fastest growing place.

Plenty of employment, lots of people move here for the affordable housing then commute east down the M4. A large number of residents not born in Swindon, was once overspill town for Londoners, explains the soulless estates like Basingstoke, Andover, Banbury, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Northampton etc.,

Thank you for the informative response beefy beefy. I appreciate your comments. Let's hope that Swindon will survive - a great old club for some 68 years and steeped in tradition from those years.

I can remember when the big Swindon stars were Bob Jones, Mick Mitchell and Danny Malone.

Not forgetting the great Briggo, Broady, and Marlborough born Ashby, and Swindonians Kilby and Holloway, roads on the new development named after these two local legends, plus the care home in Richardson Road, named after Lee, and Malone Road.

Swindon Robins held in great affection in the Town, as I discovered when moving here from souf London, having supported Wimbledon and New Cross.

Fantastic bunch of fanatical but sporting fans from Wiltshire and surrounding counties.

Watching the Budgies at the Abbey on a October night is there anywhere colder in Swindon.!!!

Boston on a Wednesday in October was an endurance test for Rye House.

Arena Essex is usually freezing. In fact I'm convinced every time they open the doors the lights come on.....

I was at the Abbey last night, and noticed the new houses are now rising behind the massive pile of earth in the car park. The location for the 'new stadium' does seem to be getting squeezed from all angles.

Very sad to hear this.

Is there no further official News on the situation regarding the new Track and Stadium?

Question...are the people at Swindon, the same people who own Torquay Utd stadium?

If so...I think Swindon Speedway is truly stuffed. This won't happen imo, if so.

I think there are.
