Swindon Stadium

I find this Thread very sad and depressing.

Is the old Abbey Stadium still to be used for Speedway next Season?

yes , I think it will get used until the critical point of all the new houses (and there are many )get filled despite the assurances from the council etc about the new stadium , the fact is councils are full of corrupt people and if they need backing for houses they will mysterious get it and quite frankly they don't care a stuff about speedway , I hope I'm wrong but just take a look at the site now and the houses and proposed houses , who in their right mind is going to build a noisey dirt track island in the middle of it ? Did hear a rumour that it won't be up and running before the u21 meeting will the old Abbey still stage it.?

The abbey hasn't got an FIM certificate so won't be able to hold it there

Well that will be a blow if not held as I was looking forward to that meeting.

they put out a press release on the 26th of Jan saying work is going ahead on schedule and if you go up close then you will see work going on , well me and others have been on the car park and nothing is happening , so just what is the score ? Either they are blatantly telling lies or they haven't been to the track and believe what they are being told , it is around 20 weeks till the u21s on the new track and there is not even a new track marked out, just been reading about Mike Bowden at Swindon football , if you put Mike Bowden Swindon into Google and scroll down to the 6th there is a forum from the football club talking about Bowden replying about the stadium development from 2007 Edited by THE DEAN MACHINE

We keep getting reports from different people about work about to start or progressing and have had now for about three years now so am not expecting a great deal until it actually happens.

Individuals report on what they see when they pass or actually visit the site for which I, and I am sure others, are grateful .

I was to ORLOV" still hope the Abbey can stage it.Did hear on the grapevine that the new stadium will happen?fingers crossed the bloke who told me is pretty reliable.

Will the Poole home sunday meeting be at 4pm.?

Fixture lists say 5pm.

I just want swindon to have a new stadium just like reading and the countless others that have seen their track taken away , I don't trust councils and housing company's as their track record for speedway is dreadful

Honestly WK walking down that road is like walking in Beirut very intimidating at night.

And if you are that way inclined services are provided.??

Nothing too intimidating there Sid, worse places in Swindon, from my cab driving days, not as bad as certain areas in bigger cities. Try a stroll round Kings Cross, North Peckham, White City, Ackney, Brixton, Tottenham, North Clapham, Harlesden, with yer white face. Edited by beefy keefy

Been there - done that.

I didn't feel intimidated but on occasions, of an evening, I never saw a white person. Nothing wrong with that - but it did seem strange in our Capital City.

Bangladeshis in Tower Amlets, big Muslim and Hindu population in east London, big African population in souf London, Peckham...my old manor,Greenwich, Brixton, Lambeth, Lewisham, loads of Oirish in Islington and Kilburn, Sikhs in Southall. Remember all the kosher butchers in Stanmore, Golders Green, Stamford Hill. Mill Hill used to be posh but loads of eastern Europeans and others have moved in. Plenty of Aussies in Shepherds Bush and Fulham, Lebanese in Edgeware Road, sure theres some Cockneys somewhere.

Wouldn't walk around Broadwater Farm, Tottingham, black gangs and big drugs turf wars with the local Turks.

I remember in 1963. my pal and me were on a speedway a night car holiday, and we visited New Cross. Being Northern boys we were not used to coloured immigrants at that time, and we were amazed and shocked to see practically everyone was foreign. People walking down the main street , driving the buses, serving in shops. It was a massive shock to the system to see such an alternative society. We laughed that the only white people in the street were the staff in the Post Office. Sort of symbolic,

Yep drove through Peckham on Saturday, totally changed from the 60s. No cockney accents unless you go to Essex, Herts, or Kent, or even the overspill towns such as Swindon, Northampton, etc.,and the 50 others where over a million Londoners settled post-war.
