Swindon Stadium

... basically saying that transport to the stadium will need to be monitored and that they want a large number of attendees to use sustainable modes of transport, ..

If there is monitoring, that means that there will be record keeping. That means that there will be comparisons made between the numbers of people using sustainable transport and a target figure. The general mood amongst people here indicates that there will be a poor take-up of walking / cycling / public transport...so on the assumption that the target is not met, then what? Will the stadium have to close at some point 12-24 months after it is built because the "Green Agenda" is not being fulfilled?

So who, with that kind of uncertainty is going to invest in the cost of building a stadium in the first place?

The Stadium is owned by GI and used primarily for dog racing, speedway rents it to run speedway.

They have no problem with numbers of fans for dogs as they only get a few there and could run it for dogs only if it came to it.

What I cannot find anywhere is any concerns from the greyhound owners.

Speedway is going to have to stop relying on dog tracks to take them. The dogs is a slowly dying sport - and it can't be saved (unlike speedway) because the animal cruelty side will win sooner or later.

Regardless, lets face it - Swindon aren't getting this stadium.

A reasonable track and seating could be put up at an out of toen location surely - because unless that starts to happen it's just going to be Reading, Swindon, Poole, Coventry etc etc etc. Do hope that if GI do let everyone down again, Karma or better still the fraud squad gets them.

More reports listed on 18th Aug relating to drainage for the stadium and surrounding area, this was one of the questions raised by the Council.

There is a new report dated 19th Aug relating to conditions about the planning.

Still awaiting details re parking that they also asked for.

Is that positive in any way or all bad - sorry I'm just unsure as to what it means with regard to the build

The key point is that we sadly still seem to be some way from planning permission being granted. Hopefully the plans will satisfy the drainage problems and now they will move on to finally come up with workable and acceptable parking plans.

Only a fool builds without planning permission so clearly there is some way still to go after all this time before they can even consider cutting the first sod.

It could still happen but this is a painfully slow example of what is a meticulous and slow procedure in the first place.

Put simply - if the plans are wrong - no stadium.

I am baffled as to how it was announced the Robins would ride this season at the new stadium, if full planning had not been granted.

Wishful thinking?

And, in any case, what sort of stadium are you going to build in six months over winter?

Hoping it all soon starts to run as smooth as some of the old-time Swindon greats rode the track in the past.

Someone, somewhere along the line has been feeding false information, you would hope accidentally. Perhaps they were hoping nobody would know how to check the facts? I dare say the speedway promotion has acted in good faith, based on information received.

If the applications (one has been withdrawn and replaced) had been submitted without significant faults we might have seen planning permission awarded a long time ago and the new stadium built as per the publicity. It appears they haven't.

I understand that the replacement application is for a 'modular', quick to construct stadium. I expect it'll be another portakabin job like Reading. That served its purpose but the original Smallmead plans were far more impressive.

Let's hope we can one day have certainty about the continuation of Swindon Speedway - whether in the existing or replacement stadium. It does still seem a distant hope. I do hope to be proved wrong, but it is vital to keep a very close eye on this case to make sure we don't have another Reading....or Milton Keynes....

As you obviously know, the progress of planning applications is very transparent these days. Councils in Sussex seem to publish every detail of an application + responses to consultation.

I would imagine that is pretty much standard for the rest of the country.

I had missed the fact that one application had been withdrawn and a second put in.

If they go for modular, it could go up very quickly.

A MacDonald's can be built in a day.

Details can be read here: http://pa1.swindon.gov.uk/publicaccess/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=O7RY9CPTHSC00

Note that this application only dates from May 2016.

There are 47 documents attached to it, some of which have been referred to by Orlov earlier. Yes it's quite transparent.

I think even if they did put up a burger bar in a day it's not the same as building a sports stadium but yes it could be a quick job. Would it be in this case though given past 'performance'? They're struggling enough just to get the paperwork right.

Seems to be the case, which has been questioned by a couple on here .

If of any interest to anyone, I went back to The Abbey on Thursday (after my trip to Redcar V Ipswich was cancelled due to the weather) to see if I could find or retrieve my old faithful Steinlager baseball cap that I must have dropped on my circuit around the perimeter of the stadium to the entrance on my walk from The Jovial Monk (a must stay at place for any long distance visiting fans, or just for anybody that enjoys great accommodation, a friendly welcome from all the staff and locals, decent IPA and free parking for the stadium itself).

Unsure who will be able to view this, but I took some snaps of the stadium on my tour around in my successful retrieval mission...
