Len Read

I'm just back from the Annual Eastern region WSRA dinner at Norwich where I caught up with Len Read once again. At 97, he is still very fit and sprightly.

Is he now the oldest former speedway rider still alive? He started riding in 1946. Are there any others still around who started in 1946? Split Waterman? Anyone else?

Not sure there are any others who started in 1946.Guess there could well be somewhere.Think Alfred Dannmeyer might be one of the oldest/earliest riders still alive, but he joined the Hamburg Motorclub in 1947(not sure if this is when he started riding though, just guess it was) and Olle Nygren started in 1948 I guess

From what I understand, the American Putty Mills - now 92 years old - started his speedway career in California in 1939 aged 16 years.

.

Born in July 1927, Henry Long started riding at age 18 after the war at the Old Barn track outside Johannesburg.

He can be seen in action photos from that time with Buddy Fuller, Fred Wills, etc. HERE

Age 88, he now lives in Franschhoek, in the Western Cape.

Henry Long is one of my all-time favourite riders. I was delighted to read this Post with the latest info on his activities.
