Eagles swoop for Phillips

IT First Eagles are hoping they have found another 'coup' in the signing of Ex-motocrosser Nick Phillips.

The popular new boy in Speedway has attracted a lot of attention from rival clubs. But Phillips turned those offers down as he had his heart set on racing for Eastbourne. 'I've recently been signed by Somerset after they had seen me ride on their training days I've had offers from other clubs but Eastbourne is where I want to be after talking to quite a few people all the arrows point back to Eastbourne".

"As soon as Connor messages me I replied 100% yes mate I'd love to ride for you guys!"

"I have raced motocross all of my life since the age of 4. Last year I fancied a change so I sold both of my motocross bikes and invested in a speedway bike. I did a bit of training last winter but with the bad weather I wasn't getting the track time I wanted. So I waited until later on in the year when I started riding for Exeter in the MDL matches scoring well. I've only been riding speedway a year really!"

Connor, 21 club co-director who builds the teams says he thinks Nicks got what it takes. "Look at Georgie last year. We were given a lot of stick saying you shouldn't chuck an unknown into a team - how he proved them wrong!"

"I've done my research and Nicks doing a second slower than Brad was round Somerset and that's Nick riding on a slicker track. He has a good pedigree about him."

"I like to think at Eastbourne we get the best out of our riders. You only have to look at their start and finish averages from last year, we won three trophies in our first campaign the team spirit was excellent and everyone loved it we were like one big family to be honest and I don't think any other team in the league came close to showing that. I believe Nick will excel in that environment!"

"Admittedly it's been tough choosing a side this year. Last year I had a few mates whereas this year there are so many riders that are my mates. As well as that I'd say I've had 25 riders ask me to race for Eastbourne this year so I've had to turn down 18 people!"

"With my Dad (Martin) experience in set ups and knowledge around the track. The bikes we have at our workshop we will always be there for whoever needs it and the boys know that! We just can't wait for the weather to dry up so we can get practicing!"

Rode for Isle of Wight. Done some meetings with Exeter. Could be a decent signing.

He's been riding for an Exeter (MDL Style Team) he scored 11 vs a Wolverhampton team (at Somerset) according to

Im not convinced. Reasonable prospect but hardly exciting and has been led a merry dance round Somerset by the likes of Govier. If both Phillips & Anderson got 11 and Saul Bulley scored 6 who the heck did Wolves put out?

When was that? He's only been riding a year and not properly so let's give him a chance, better than strudwick I expect

Im more than happy to be proven wrong (as many Birmingham fans will know) however I prefer riders who graduate to the NL to come through the development league ranks and serve a bit of an apprenticeship rather than the odd meeting against select opposition (with the exception of experienced & proven grass/long trackers). However that is just my personal opinion.

I wouldn't make a judgement until he has ridden. Connor wouldn't sign someone that will go nowhere. Even if he was not so good at the practise he hasn't had dugards help yet. I'll let you know what I think after good Friday as I think he has some potential
