Kings Lynn Declared Mdl Champions 2015

MDL

The 2015 MDL title has been a close run competition. Despite a cut-off point on September 15th the new champions have not been declared whilst consideration of fixtures up to that point were looked at by the SCB and the MDL.

Although Belle Vue led the table at the cut-off date ahead of Kings Lynn a cancellation at late notice by Long Eaton at Kings Lynn was investigated. The Invaders pulled out of the fixture due to being unable to track a team with no dates before the cut-off date forfeited the meeting. Until a full investigation was made the points had not been awarded to Kings Lynn but this has now been concluded and the points awarded to Kings Lynn.

Belle Vue were unable to race their match with Peterborough after the Elite League Play-Off semi-final after rain caused that meeting to be curtailed after heat 14.

All these points were considered in the final decision and as a result of all this the 2015 MDL title goes to Kings Lynn Lightning.

Most MDL riders have ridden for multiple clubs, six or eight in some cases,; hardly any club had a fixed team, so the league table is neither here nor there, really. Is anyone going to publish riders' averages for the end of the season?

May I check a couple of things here:

Is the King's Lynn v Long Eaton match referred to the one postponed on 29th July?

Were Peterborough awarded the points for the Belle Vue rain-off on 14th September?

Edit: The SGB league table doesn't seem to suggest that any points were awarded in the BV v Pete match.

Does it matter who wins and who is bottom . Surely its all about rider development. I do wonder if there even any point in have such a thing as a league table

Yes it does , it's this is the sort of attitude that has lead to lads showing no commitment to the fixtures and just picking and choosing , adjusting results and making up results to suit , has brought around a situation where team managers ( who give their time effort and petrol money for free ) are walking away because it's a nightmare and at their own time expense to find 4 lads to race and teams are folding , promoters are cancelling or curtailing MDL meetings on a whim ,after lads have travelled hundreds of miles to ride ," because it doesn't really matter" , if MDl has any purpose at all it's to show kids what it takes to make it as a speedway rider , that means being part of a team and learning the responsibilities and comradeship that this will bring in the future , not showing up when you feel like it and riding purely at your own convenience , if you think there's no point in having a league table (even schools have them so there is a point) maybe theres no point in having a league . then no one will need to make any effort and we can go back to othe old style free for all second halfs where you turn up and take your chance for a few laps at a meeting , or get invited for a ride depending on who your relatives are or who you know at the club , and instead of learning to ride and getting a bit of experience of actual team racing , take the huge step from practising to riding in the national league for 2 weeks before getting dropped and walking away from the sport disenchanted ,

It is true that promoters do cancel MDL matches on a whim, when riders and helpers (including myself) have spent time and money travelling there. It is also true that promoters treat MDL riders like dirt, showing no loyalty at all to them.

As for your comment that riders turn up when they feel like it, in fact they want to ride as often as possible which means riding for as many teams as possible. If promoters or managers want exclusive use of a rider, then they should put them on contract and pay them!

I have no problem with lads riding as much and for as many teams as they like , but at the end of the day they need to be held accountable to 1 team in the first place . lets have no more I cant make it here or there tonight , because Im riding for another team at my local track instead , of course when you are riding out of your own pocket and with assistance from family members there will be times when you cant make it for your own Team . but you should be ringing your team manager and explaining . not expecting them to be ringing you and asking if you are available , time to get this MDL pool system sorted with proper rules . It would stop some of some of the superstars cherry picking meetings and leaving all the travelling to others .

Of course riders can choose who they ride for, when, where etc but im with Speedibee on this one. Sadly the number of riders turning out for their own "team" seems to be dramatically on the decline this season.

Whilst targets of riders in the MDL vary dramatically (some want NL some just want to ride etc) it is very good preparation for the strains of NL racing to complete all the fixtures of your "team" and then take any additional guest rides if you wish.

The riders that do whatever suits them forget the hard work done by unpaid enthusiasts to keep the MDL running and if they are not repaid in effort and commitment I fear some may decide to save themselves a lot of heartache and walk away.

Sadly its already happened. jason pipe says he no longer wants to be involved in MDL so thats peterborugh and buxton , and steve cook has quit as long eaton manager , The Bspa want registration fees from teams , managers licenses to be paid for , all the riders Licensed and Meetings run according to the rules they set , yet turn a blind eye when Official fixtures get cancelled without good reason !!

That's ridiculous and very sad. Both great for the sport with their enthusiasm especially Cookie who is one of the many unsung heroes.

If the bspa / scb are serious about developing future riders then the registration / managers fees should be waived which would free up a little cash to help with rider costs.

Referees don't help either as they demand being paid a full additional match fee after 22 heats so MDL double headers cant be completed which could potentially double emerging riders bike time with very little additional work.

Sadly , what is seen as a great way of encouraging new blood into speedway by many , is treated as a thorn in the side of many promoters and the sports governing body . I'm afraid speedways hierarchy are stuck in the belief , that the public want to see teams of foreigners race 15 heats in the minimum time possible , then having spent a considerable sum for their 1.5 hours entertainment be ushered out of the stadium as quickly as possible . it seems to be beyond their comprehension that some people might actually take an interest in watching the sports future stars taking their fledgling steps , and the long term benefit may just well be ,some riders who dont need airfares paying , and dont have to rush off to europe to race again in their own country the next day , also that in the future some of these riders will be providing local interest to the people whose money is keeping their teams afloat
