customhouseregular
According to the BBC website today the Olympic Stadium as well as being West Ham's new home will also stage Motor Sport events. Has anyone heard any rumours?
customhouseregular
Apparently the redeveloped stadium will have 21,000 retractable seats which can be removed to enable the laying of an Athletics track. Presumably then a Speedway track could also be laid without affecting the pitch. Any thoughts?.
Alan_Jones
The annual Race of Champions event is being staged there over 2 days in November. They lay a fairly elaborate figure of 8 tarmac track with a crossover bridge and run pairs of cars against each from opposite sides, pursuit style. The last time they ran it in this country was at Wembley about 7/8 years ago.
Deano
Anything is possible, but unless anyone with cash and a business case has been in contact with the stadium owners, I very much doubt speedway will be seen there.

customhouseregular
The lack of a roof never stopped Wembley though Philip .
New Science
The lack of a roof never stopped Wembley though Philip . That was a permanent track.

norbold
That was a permanent track. Not between 1957 and 1969 nor after 1971 it wasn't. Edited October 11, 2015 by norbold
iris123
BUT no roof... Doesn't always help.....as it happens the Stock car Challenge was yet again held in the Veltins Arena yesterday.Pity speedway couldn't do what Stock Cars has managed for a decade.Just look at the entertainment and the crowd!!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5GhKm3FdSI Not between 1957 and 1969 nor after 1971 it wasn't. Wasn't the basis of the track there and just needed the corners done and the obvious track work of course?

When you say "basis of the track", what do you mean? The shape was there, except for the corners, but there was no track laid. That's why i said ish1 Norbold Yes, I know. That is what I thought "New Science" was trying to say.It wasn't like a temp track that was built from scratch over some other surface. The base of the track and presumably the drainage was still there

IMG were interested in running the Olympic Stadium, so would be surprised if the possibility hadn't been investigated at some point.
