I think it's the constant dilution of the teams, the premise being to level the playing field to keep the league table and racing closer together, unfortunately, it's always levelled downwards, to the lowest denominator, and that has helped destroy the speedway in this Country. Only one club seems to rise out of the levelled mediocrity, and that's Poole, ok, they twist and bend rules to breaking point to do it, but what's stopping other teams planning similarly? Ok, cash I suppose, but that boils down to going out and getting it (Sponsors) instead of keeping ones head below the parapets and doing nothing......

Just an opinion.

Crowd levels have been falling for decades, it's the same in Poland and Sweden, it's just that they are falling from a higher level. At Bradford they used to visit schools and were well sponsored and had top riders. The bus loads of kids that they shipped in, looked on in disbelief when a race had only four riders and was over in a minute, very few ever returned. I love speedway, been watching, sponsoring and mechanicing since the 50s but most of my friends drifted away and some even ask if it still exists, none ever express any desire to go back to it though. Thread after thread we get people complaining about promoters, if it wasn't for them you'd have nothing.

Back in the day, if two teams met with a similar averaged rider missing from each team because of injury, the r/r or guest facility would be cancelled out.

Each team would then promote their 'number eight' to cover for the absentees.

I really can't understand why this system can't be re-introduced as it reduces guests and retains credibility for the sport, not to mention it being a useful tool for giving youngsters a chance in the team.

Is the number 8 the rider that all teams must name when using R/R but vary rarely do.

It was at the time.

In those days they also held 'second half' races where youngsters and riders who weren't included in the team raced. It was one of these riders who were promoted into the team in the event of both teams having a similar quality rider injured.

There used to be many Rules - they dropped them for dafter ones.

I'm not sure rider replacement was ever a particularly sensible rule from an external perspective. Imagine if a rugby team playing in the World Cup said, well we've got a player injured, so the other 14 will take turns to play in their position, but BTW we've got an extra player who we might play, but probably not..., unless of course you've got a player injured too when they'll cancel each other out...

But if only two (or a small number) of players were on the field for short periods, then that could happen, as they aren't, the comparison isn't relevant. The other difference is that Rugby is a sporting contest where the best or strongest team should win, whereas Speedway is more a form of entertainment where rider replacement, guests and tacticals (of various sorts) are all used to falsely even up the supposed contest and attempt to make things seem closer and more exciting. The alternative would probably see a lot of clubs go bankrupt or be uncompetitive (or both). Thus far nobody has been able to make Speedway into a fair contest, I really wish they could.

According to CVS in last week's Star - there is no guarantee that the heat leader list will be made public!!

And why should it be, as long as the Promoters know and no rider is forced out of a job if they are either not on the list or are surplus to the 24.

Because fans enjoy playing "fantasy teams" over the long winter months and you'd think that promoters might want to go out of their way to keep the few remaining paying customers happy?

What are the odds they will publish a mistake in one of them.

I'd rather take a bet that neither list is published.

I imagine they'll publish the FTR list on the day that the draft takes place, but can't see the heat leader list being published at all.

I was actually told that the FTR picks would take place today, but I have to imagine the person got the wrong end of the stick...surely! Right?!

If the list is not made public it will be another contemptuous way the fans are treated, What are they afraid of?? Surely it would generate a lot of added interest.

Why all this cloak and dagger approach?? Why not have everything out in the open and people can be accountable. Don't they realise we all want the same thing. 95% of the remaining fans are genuine, and only want what best for the sport. Surely that counts for something........
