What is the best ever racing VENUE

Belle Vue was the best track ever and the only one that comes close now is Sheffield or KL. I used to enjoy Halifax and Birmingham though. As for Coventry it must have took me 5 matches before i seen a passing manouvre. Cradley, great sarnies and a decent pits bend which was the only place you could pass.

You obviousley never watched Jan O Pedersen around the wood if you think the pits bend was the only place you could pass!!!

For me it has to be Hyde Road, followed by Odsal and Owlerton

Firs Stadium, Norwich (Speedways greatest loss .... I am biased I know)

Blackbird Road, Leicester

Hyde Road, Manchester

Caister Road, Yarmouth

Any Southern Area League track.

Speedway being lost at these places is heartbreaking

Only Rye House remains of them today and even that is not the original

Interesting that most people seem to like big tracks and most these have disappeared - new tracks seem to be getting even smaller!

This is what cheeses me off about speedway today - the fact that tracks like Sheffield are viewed as "trick" tracks. I come from an era where Sheffield was one of several larger ones, so I find it difficult to accept the riders today can't deal with them.

Hackney would be my choice, not a lock up speedway but one with lots of activities, a vibrant supporters club. a famous training school, a well prepared track where everyone had a fair go, a good location geographically,

Such a "good location" indeed, that the world has decided to stage the Olympics there!!!!:wink:

Methinx, though, that transport links for 2012 might just about be better than that walk via Ruckholt Rd. from Leyton tube!!!!

Yes, the racing at these tracks from the mid-1950s until the league's sad demise was something out of the ordinary. Yet it was regarded as being only third tier speedway!

I never got to Caister Road- what was it like that I might know-were they sparse facilities like a Long Eaton say-come on starghost I need to know!!

I always remember it as a nice place in the 1950s. Here's an update on the venue (although some photos show soemthing not generally approved of in speedway circles... ):

I have to agree with Hyde Road. I also used to like going to The Shay, Halifax. :)

LW I was thinking exactly the same, I loved the Shay but then I loved Wimbledon for the NLRC it was the Wembley of the National League

(oh and dare I say it Crayford loved visiting there they made a lovely homemade steak and kidney pudding in the restaurant  )

Hyde Road for me too, its where I fell in love with Speedway. I remember being about 8 and everyone in the stands stamping their feet - so loud and it felt like the place might fall down lol.

Away tracks, Bradford, Cradley, Kings Lynn, Sheffield - never forget going to Trelawny - I MUST have gone the wrong way surely.........but I hadn't lol.
