greybear
My favourite tracks are/were: Halifax - My home track. Simply awesome. Bradford - Great racing track. Cradley Heath - Good racing, great pork sandwiches & genuine enthusiasm for the sport from the home fans all combined to make it a great venue. Kings Lynn - Great race track, not been for a couple of years now but hope to visit again soon.

KevH
We had a dog track @ Canterbury.......... it was the downfall of speedway! The doggie racing people might think that Canterbury speedway was the downfall of Canterbury and Speedway Well if they do - who cares? Canterbury and Speedway both benefited from the Crusaders and if you think any different - go watch dog racing
Jeff.
Yes the area where the track was is a car auction but the whole Belle Vue site now consists of houses a cinema a bingo hall a couple of fast food type eateries (one recently closed). Wings
Got to say the best venue was my first world final 1978 Wembley 90,000 people with over half standing, What an atmosphere can still remember it like yesterday walking into to the top section & the noise hitting you. I also walked out after the meeting through the pits with its massive blue doors. Happy memories ....

keith
Thanks for the link Grachan. The photo of Hyde Road stadium before its final demolition is a very sad sight indeed. :-( Does anybody else know of anywhere else where I could get videos of speedway at Hyde Road :?: the "aces of yesteryear" videos are pretty good i think there are about 5 volumes and you can get them from the track i could get them for you if you want me to
Mark Evans
Belle Vue was the best track ever and the only one that comes close now is Sheffield or KL. I used to enjoy Halifax and Birmingham though. As for Coventry it must have took me 5 matches before i seen a passing manouvre. Cradley, great sarnies and a decent pits bend which was the only place you could pass.
mikael
Although I lived in Canterbury, going to Hyde Road remains one of the most memorable experiences. Being pre-silencers in 1969, the noise was something you'd never forget. It was like a roar and the wooden stands just made it more intense and were lots of people who gave the visitor the impression they were immersed in the sport. Plus there was this extra aura about the place knowing about its history and Peter Craven. It should have been given a preservation order, not demolished. I'd also say Waterden Road, but after Graham Miles' accident, it never felt the same to me. But the general quality of the racing and the whole vibe of Friday at 8 and Len Silver did make it pretty special. London without top League speedway is just ridiculous. Isn't Haringey still in existence? Shame Canterbury never went into the top league because the fans really loved their speedway every Saturday night. The racing was really good and after the 1970 Championship win there just seemed a momentum towards the top division. It was cultural vandalism to allow it to close on the say-so of a few zealots and frankly, like so many similar provincial towns, the loss of the speedway left a big void for all -the- family entertainment that''s never been replaced. One I missed and always regretted, was Exeter-Ivan Mauger must have been quite a sight on the banking. and yes, under the modern system, Ivan, Fundin and Briggo would have been even more dominant. WATigerman
Interesting site - but that picture of 'Racing at Belle Vue' ain't from Belle Vue. It certainly isn't; it's from Owlerton with PC leading Dougie Wyer.
SHALEWAY69
Hackney would be my choice, not a lock up speedway but one with lots of activities, a vibrant supporters club. a famous training school, a well prepared track where everyone had a fair go, a good location geographically, Len Silver ...the best promoter since Johnny Hoskins and more charcters than you could poke a stick at.....but I am a one eyed Hawk.
