Not sure which Steve Clarke it was in 1973 (I think that there was a couple of riders with the same name racing around this time).

Will get Aldershot details (covering 1950 to 1960) to you some time next week.

Sorry but I have no details of the pre-war meetings held in Aldershot.

Aldershot Shots – 1950 National League Division 3. Aldershot finished 6th in the League and made the 3rd Division Semi-Final round of the National Trophy. Just to confirm Norbert’s squad –

Ivor (Ossie) Powell Trevor Redmond Joe Rodwell Doug Ible Basil Harris Doug Papworth Bill Grimes Ron Burnett Pat Flanagan Bob Harrison (2) Bob Bunney Ken Smith Allen Briggs John Dore Johnny Guilfoyle Dave Jones Jack Peck

Aldershot Shots – 1951 National League Division 3. The Shots best ever season with a 3rd place League finish. However, in other competitions they didn’t do well – finishing 3rd in their qualifying group for the Festival of Britain trophy and going out of the National Trophy at the first hurdle though it was to a Poole Team that totally dominated NL3 this year. Aldershot’s major claim to fame is that this season Geoff Mardon made it, albeit as a non-riding reserve, to the Wembley World Final – this is the Only time that a 3rd Division rider has graced the big night (some sources list Mardon as a Wimbledon rider for the final, this is wrong as he was loaned to Aldershot from the Dons but raced the season under Aldershots colours).

Bert Edwards Bill Grimes Basil Harris Craig Jones Geoff Mardon Doug Papworth Ivor (Ossie) Powell Trevor Redmond Brian Wilson Bob Harrison (2) Pat Flanagan John Dore Joe Rodwell Ron Burnett Doug Ible

Aldershot Shots – 1952. National League Division 3. 3rd and final ‘proper’ League season. Aldershot struck financial trouble mid-season due to diminishing crowds and survived by transferring out some of their Stars (Bert Edwards being notable). One major contributing factor to the loss of fans was the retention of main man Trevor Redmond by parent club Wembley. Aldershot had been hoping to retain his services for one more season and he even rode in a National Trophy meeting for them. The Shots finished a disappointing 7th in the League and went out at the first time of asking to Plymouth in the National Trophy.

Bernie Aldridge Ron Burnett John Dore Bert Edwards Charles Frenzel Len Glover Vic Gooden Bill Grimes Basil Harris Doug Papworth Ivor (Ossie) Powell Jack Taylor Tom Turnham Arch Windmill Trevor Redmond

Aldershot (not sure if the nickname ‘Shots’ was used this season) – 1953 Non-League. Primarily a series of amateur challenges against made up (i.e. non-existent track) Sides. Moved to racing against SAL Teams mid-season on. Final meeting of the season was a challenge match on Boxing Day.

Bob Bunney Frank Turner Eric Hockaday Tommy Sweetman Fred Siggins Peter Mason Tony Lockyer R Crouch George Murrell Cliff Jones Dick Bailey Bob Warner Jim Preddy Cliff Cordery Pat Cantill Frank Taylor Jim Smith H Davies ? Barns

Aldershot Shots – 1954 Southern Area League. Withdrew mid-season. Last home meeting on the 12th June, last away meeting on 27th June. Lack of support has been quoted as the reason though I have read somewhere that supporters had expected the Team to re-join the National League and were unhappy at the apparent demotion to the SAL.

Bob Bunney Ron Burnett Eric Hockaday Alan Lunn Peter Mason Tommy Sweetman Jack Taylor Frank Turner Jim Smith George Murrell Gordon Richards

Aldershot did not operate in 1955 or 1956 under any guise.

Aldershot Poppies – 1957 Southern Area League. Finished 4th out of 4. Poppies nickname as the California Poppies switched tracks to Aldershot mid-season. The last California result taken over by Aldershot was on the 19th May. Note that Aldershot had been running as a non-League/Open venue up until the switch of California.

Ross Gilbertson John Day Ron Webb Phil Sheppard Pat Flanagan Ron Walton George Aldridge Ted Spittles Peter Mould Bill Booth Jimmy Gleed Jim Tebby Pete Rogers

Aldershot Shots – 1958 non-League. Would have competed in the Southern Area League had it run this season. 3 meetings only listed with the last being a Home Challenge on the 10th May.

Jimmy Gleed Ron Webb Ron Walton Pat Flanagan John Day Ross Gilbertson Phil Sheppard Ted Spittles

Aldershot Shots – 1959 Southern Area League. Some reports say that Southern Rovers moved to Aldershot. Aldershot finished 3rd in the League.

Eric Hockaday John Edwards Derek Timms Bob Thomas Arthur Ashby George Major Eric Eadon Dave Freeborn Norman Strachan Ken Vale Ted Spittles Roy Pickering Peter Vandenberg Karl Kirby Roy Walsh Brian Meredith

Aldershot Shots – 1960 Non-League. Closed after home meeting on 16th July though they rode 2 away challenges with the last one being a defeat at Eastbourne on the 14th August. Circa 1976 the Speedway Express reported that attempts to reintroduce the sport to Tongham had been tried but failed. I think the reason given was the concrete block under the start/finish area but there may have also been opposition from Reading under the 30 mile rule. The stadium is now under the Blackwater Valley bypass.
