No mention of Romford in any of 1969, '70 & '71 (and West Ham in 1972).

I've only looked at 1969 - 72 but the Rye House 'rider pool' looks as if it has a few e&o's, for example: I believe that Charlie Benham, Ron Edwards, Dave Kennett & Dave Piddock represented Rye House in 1971; - Pete Scanlon = Paul Scanlan, maybe.

Crayford 1970: - Colin Cook = Colin Clark (shown as Clarke in 1969 - and as Cook again in 1968)?

Thank you for pointing out any errors in the team lists. When I have spare time I will edit corrections as where they are needed. Details of any missing team lists would be appreciated.

Remember the majority of the team listings were compiled by one person, Bryan Tungate, who doubtless had no experienced person able to cross check his line-ups information. It must have initially been an enormous undertaking on Bryan's part?

I can give you team lists for the following seasons if you want ?

1929 to 1939, 1946 to 1976 (these are based almost exclusively on files on the Speedway Researcher website)

1977 to 1981 plus 1985 (based on the yearbooks primarily)

1989, 1990 and 1992 (based on the yearbooks)

1993 to 2009 (based on the Speedway Star, yearbooks and the Internet)

These cover all League Teams and most non-League Tracks (non-League mainly post war and patchy in places) not just London ones.

Let me know if you want any of it and, if so, what.

Cheers

PS. This is based on revised files sent, or being sent, to the Researcher

Thank you for the offer. Basically, the details that I feel are essentially needed are -

All Rayleigh seasons

Romford - 1969, 1970, 1971

West Ham - 1972

If you can provide these, please email them to me. Jim Henry has my email address.

Thank you.

Thank you very much indeed. I will edit these into the London Speedways website. Still needed are all the team squads and respective leagues and divisions for Rayleigh.

In 1972, were Wimbledon, West Ham and Rye House in different divisions? Dons in BL Division One and Division Two for West Ham and Rye House?

In 1972 Rye were non-League/Open. Rayleigh rode in BL2 that year.

Rye's first season, excluding SAL years, as a League side was 1974 in BL2.

Wimbledon and West Ham were as stated (wasn't '72 the season West Ham closed with the promotopn moving mid-season to Barrow ?)

I will see what I can do for Rayleigh for the 40's and 50's for you.

Bit long winded I'm afraid. Rayleigh to end of the 50's. Will do the remaining 60's years later

Rayleigh 1948 – Non-League/Open

Bruce Abernethy, Percy Brine, Arthur Pilgrim, Roy Uden, Ron Howes, Jimmy Dunn, Jim Gregory, Stan Crouch, Vic Butcher, Vic Gooden, Len Cooley, Jack Wright, Billy Newell, Jack Milross, Pete Lansdale

Rayleigh 1953 – Southern League (was NL Div 3. The season with no official champions! Take your pick between Exeter and Rayleigh as there appears to have been no official resolution to the issues around the voided Exeter v Rayleigh meetings. Personally I think Exeter have the moral high ground)

Johnny Applegate Frank Bettis Peter Clark Ron Howes Gerald Jackson Maury McDermott Les McGillivray Tom O'Connor Alby Smith Bert Little Eric Ebbs

Rayleigh Juniors 1953 – East Anglian Junior League (not completed it would appear)

This is a massive task of cross posting the data but is worth all the effort. So far, I have updated Rayleigh on the original list to include the 1854 season. Thanks for all your input Compost - much appreciated.

West Ham had closed at the end of the 1971 season, but had a short reprieve in 1972 when Romford moved the Bombers to West ham on the forced closure of their stadium and, yes, they operated in the second division. But they didn't last long at Custom House and moved off to Barrow.

Southern Rovers 1957 – Southern Area League (also appear to have gone under the name of Rayleigh Rovers and based out of Rayleigh)

Eric Eadon Stan Clark Leo McAuliffe Brian Meredith Vic Hall Tommy Sweetman Neil Roberts Colin Gooddy Eric Ebbs Fred Greenwell Pat McKenzie Tony Eadon Brian Miller Ivor Brown Mike Lawrence Alan Pearce

The Southern Rovers were originally a team without a home track as the name suggests and in 1956 had operated as a sort of wandering club using different tracks for their "home" matches. It proved to a be a very difficult logistical problem for the team and at the end of the 1956 season, it was hoped that they had found a permanent home at Earl's Barton in Northamptonshire.but when that fell through, Vic Gooden, the Rayleigh promoter, gave them a home as their Southern Area League team, Rayleigh.Rockets, had gone up to the National League. So they then operated as Rayleigh Rovers.

After being out of speedway for two years, 1958 and 59, Rayleigh made a triumphant return to speedway, winning the inaugural Provincial Leage with a team consisting of Reg Reeves, Eric Hockaday, Alan Smith, Pete Lansdale, Stan Stevens, Clive Hitch and Roy Craighead. John Leggett and Wally Mawdsley also turned out for them during the season.

The 1961 team had Harry Edwards, Reg Reeves, Bob Thomas, Stan Stevens, Roy Craighead, Pete Sampson, Geoff Penniket and Terry Stone.

Yes, Romford closed and moved to Custom House as the West Ham Bombers for the start of the 1972 season, but were able only to complete 12 x league matches in BL2 before they lost their home at Custom House and the promotion moved to Barrow.

West Ham Bomber's last match was at home to Hull on 23rd May 1972 although they were due to ride as West Ham at Workington on 2nd June 1972 but the meeting was postponed due to rain. The Barrow Bombers first official fixture was away at Peterborough on 9th June 1972 with Mike Sampson and Bob Coles from the West Ham team riding.

The original website is now updated to include all the latest amendments given. They are all included by using the OP Link. The updates for Rayleigh are now only missing the 1960s seasons. Thank you everyone for your help.

I see no reason why Aldershot should not be included on the website. I understand there were two Aldershot tracks. Any details in regard to these would be appreciated - years of operation, locations

etc.

This style for Aldershot would be appreciated:

HIGH BEECH.

Opened February 19 1928. Closed August 6 1932. Reopened May 2 1937. Closed August 27 1939. Reopened 1948. Closed 1950. Address: King's Oak Hotel, High Beech, Loughton, Essex.

::::::: Compost - Thank you for the latest Rayleigh list, now added to the website details. I appreciate your assistance.

If you are taking Rayleigh up to 1969, are you going to include them from 1970-73 when they had complete BL2 seasons before closing and moving to Rye House?

Having researched a bit further, I am pretty sure that the rider listed:

1968 Crayford: as Colin Cook

1969 Crayford: as Colin Clarke, and

1970 Crayford: as Colin Cook

should more correctly be shown as Colin Clark and being the same rider who appeared once as a No. 8 for Romford in 1971.

Will get Aldershot details (covering 1950 to 1960) to you some time next week.
