Glasgow 2016

Recommended Posts

In the Rossiter quote, he covered the GP issues which are apparently being addressed, and while admitting it won't happen this season, seemed confident that it would in the near future.

Alternate week racing, may not be acceptable to you but it looks like that is the future if Rossiter is to be believed.

Alternate weeks would be a financial disaster for clubs, can't see it working out at all.

Why.........they would be staging the same number of meetings, and in some cases, more regulary than in recent seasons.

Would it be the same number of meetings? Unless I'm missing something, how can it be if all meetings are on a Friday and season duration is the same? Stadium availability where facilities are shared and accommodating rain-offs would be issues.

So why I think it wouldn't work ...

1. Sky - Do they need another Friday night sport? No. Speedway is close to being a niche sport. It currently fills an empty Monday night during summer months. By all accounts, Sky only re-signed a deal to stop BT getting it. No Sky money ... disaster.

Assuming it's not the same number of meetings.

2. Speedway needs continuity for fans to get in the routine of attending. Too many other non-speedway distractions to get folks out the routine.

3. Gate money halved.

4. In stadium fans' spend on drinks, food, tat - greatly reduced.

5. Sponsors - Half the exposure, half the investment. Riders and clubs.

6. Less top class riders = lesser product = less outside investment.

On the plus side, less travel and wage costs.

Works in Sweden and Poland, clubs could always run a NL side on alternate weeks if they're that desperate. British Speedway has got to stop thinking it's the 1970s, as have the fools who bang on about needing their weekly speedway fix. Try supporting away from home then, simples.

Mainly stumbling block is owners of stadiums who will not make any shared stadiums on Friday nights.

Of course. What do the paying public know about anything, anyway?

Customers = Fools

My suggestion is based around the Elite League which is not viable in its current format. If people want to see the top riders than they need to adapt to what's sustainable. Apologies for the use of the word 'fools' but some people need to modernise their thinking otherwise we'll never move on in this country.

Backword thinking blights this sport and we need to join the 21st century asap.

I agree that the sport needs to join the 21st century - and seeing as this is a Glasgow thread we are leading by example. What is needed is more young riders coming through which is coming on. The premier to my mind is a better league than the elite (the clue is in the name - call something elite and you are asking for trouble). I'd love to see us and or Edinburgh (under different management I would think) running a team like Northside Stars. Or even a National league team. I would 100% go and watch it. I love watching the young lads who are really enthusiastic and unpredictable on the track.

However, I definately want weekly speedway at the least. It's not like football when you can nip out for a game yourself or watch the local amateurs. I want more speedway not less, and tbh as long as there is a good level of competition, I'm not that bothered about having the best riders in the world. Why should we have? Poland Should! I can watch the GP's for that.... but I'd like a good, solid Glasgow team, with good competitive meetings and a few teams every year in with a shout.

Anyway that's off track, yes was a bit disappointed with Jonas, but to be fair he didn't blow me away at Glasgow.

1. You are spot on that speedway needs to move into the 21st century in terms of entertaining the fans and you are right Glasgow have shown the example to follow. I only hope that more promoters heed this, but I can imagine a lot of response will be along the lines of "but Glasgow have money to spend". You reap what you sow.

2. Again, like you I think it would be a great idea for Edinburgh / Glasgow to run a junior outfit, but I would go one further and like every team, Elite and Premier, to run a "junior" team of some level, then run a sort of regional competition, to cut down on travelling. It floods the sport with young riders and second half meetings gives fans more racing.

3. On a personal note, I don't really care if the very top riders want to ride in this country. What we need to concentrate on is producing a steady supply of a decent standard of rider, so that if these top riders don't want to ride here, then there is always somebody else to fill their shoes. Look at rugby, The domestic competitions over here are continuing despite the World Cup being on and top internationals being away there, that is because they have enough replacements of a decent standard that they won't be missed.

Totally agree with your sentiment. However, my point is about financial viability, I'm far from stuck in the 70s when it comes to business.

It does I agree with that its not just the issue of shared stadiums though.............there are local authorities that put restrictions one when the stadium can be used for what sports from a noise point of view.............one night racing if it were ever to happen would have to be on a Wednesday or Thursday...............but I have my doubts it ever will happen and like a lot of others do not want it to happen..............

As for supporting away from home for some that is a physical impossibility due to finances and other things like the hours they work.............not every team has a neighbour within an hours drive of them.................I would if I could go to Somerset or when they get going again next year the Isle of Wight for week when we have no home meeting but each one is a two hour drive each way plus the cost of admission etc.................for a lot of us it is not cost effective............When I was a lot younger I used to do a lot of away trips...............now if I go to somewhere other than Poole I am lucky if I go once a year..........not all of us have bottomless pits when it comes to money.............plus I miss some home meetings because of the hours I work.......

1. A Summers 8.37

2. J Sarjeant 5.00

3. R Worrall 6.84

4. ?? 6.38

5. N Morris 7.91

6. B Wilson-Dean 5.00

7. NL Draft 3.00

That would be a weaker team than this year unless there's someone knocking about on 6.38 I don't know about. I'd like to think if Lawson isn't back (I'd expect him to be) we got someone else contending for #1. Love Sarj and really want to keep him, but at the moment he is a 5 pointer although I expect his average will improve this year.
