Swindon 2016 - A New Era Starts...we Thought..

Recommended Posts

I spoke with Terry Russell at the Press and Practice day back in March and other than saying the track would be about 300 metres and based on the Cardiff shape he didn't seem to know an awful lot else about the stadium when I quizzed him on the facilities and the capacity.

At the end of the day the speedway club remain the tenants at the new stadium and the only people who really know what's going on are Stadia UK (unfotunately)

I don't think the Robins promotion has ever really been in a position to announce with any certainty when the new stadium wll be ready. I think 'in time for the beginning of the 2016 season' was always just wishful thinking.

I seriously doubt that Terry or Rosco are in the loop at all. I've suspected this since 2006 and I still suspect it now.

And Terry really does have egg all over his face with his recent protestations about rumour mongers!

And Alun needs to seriously up his game on this too and be brave enough to pull his boss to one side and tell him that they are taking the piss out of the clubs supporters.

OK we were taken for a ride on Sunday and we will be still standing on the Abbey terraces next year. But was it that much of an issue-at the end of the day we got an end of season filler meeting that otherwise wouldn't have happened. We were also there as part of a large crowd which was nice. No big deal-mugged? No. Entertained? Yes. Move on!

Not really ...no one would gone if it was not a farewell meeting with that line up ....mugged yes ....being conned by someone is a big deal .

It was like going to a funeral and finding after that the person was not really dead .

Would like to see Doyley or Bomber as number 1, with Killer, Zengi and Morra back...Batch needs a change of club, hasn't cut the mustard this year. Hans possibly on his low average. If they went for an English rider would like to see Cookie, one of the fastest riders seen at Blunsdon this year, or even Howarth back. Summers was an ace signing, but average could be too high. Sedgey and Ellis would be good for the Roobins, and Charlie Wright did well this year. Swindon are rumoured to be changing their colours to gold and green when they move into the new stadia.

You cant have Harris until 2017 when the Bees have closed

But to be fair, councils are put in difficult positions. After the vandals/fire etc they are often left with an eyesore piece of derelict land. It is alright having PP for a stadium but with no one to pony up the readies it doesn't get built and in the meantime the land becomes more of a mess or travellers get on it etc. Ultimately the only option is to allow the land to be developed as was pretty much the case at those two venues

So did Coventry, your'e right , covenants mean nothiong when theres money to be made

So TR is still saying that any issues should be resolved by the end of October and the builders are ready to go even though members of the Council have commented that the final planning consent will probably not be given in 2015.

Has he never worked with the Councils before even if GI have sorted out the remaining issues asap, his timescale is very optimistic.

He has now admitted that we may be racing in the current stadium for a period, something that many fans have been castigated by him for mentioning.

He has at least assured the fans that he is doing all he can to keep the Robins riding in 2016.

Still think he's being optimistic. Even with the strong backing of M/Cr Council and the lack of a third party owner, the new Belle Vue project took what seemed like an eternity to us Aces fans. I really do hope that Swindon are in their new stadium next season, but spending 2016 at The Abbey wouldn't be the end of the world as long as you could see firm progress as we have during the 2015 season at the dog track.

From what I remember of the Belle Vue situation, theirs was effectively Manchester Council applying to Manchester Council for planning permission, and there was no way it was going to be turned down.

But even so, they still had to go through the procedure of a formal planning application, notifying residents, putting notices on lamp posts, waiting for objections, and the a 3 Month cooling-off period before permission could be rubber stamped.

So if the PP for Swindon still isn't in place, and there's a formal application to be made along with a 3 month waiting period, building wouldn't be able to start until the end of February at the earliest? Is this the case?

I think our best hope is that the Abbey can be preserved for another season in 2016

That's about right - as I said, I think he's being optimistic. Planning and everything that goes on around it seems to have its' own timescales and you just have to accept it. No doubt Gordon and Morton were as frustrated as hell, but there was absolutely nothing they could do to speed up the process.

so how would you have felt if there was no farewell meeting and the new track was ready in 2016 ?. regardless of any speculation or doubt , I will be at the last official meeting at Coventry and wont leave until I've seen the last rider cross the line . if their is racing beyond 2016 I shall count myself lucky . and will just be glad I spent an evening in the company of some of my heroes from the past

Yea, Orion is right! I'd hate going to the funeral of a loved one and then find they are actually alive still. That would make me so bloody angry! Or relieved. Its either anger or relief anyway. Thinking on it probably relief mostly. And a bit of annoyance that I'd changed my socks for a funeral. :P

There was never any doubt ...stadium uk don't build new stadiums meaning the abbey cant be knock down and even if they did go ahead is could never be done before the start of next season anyone who has work in the building trade could tell you that ....I said all this before Sunday by the way . if cov have farewell meeting that I expect it will be the last so I don't blame you if you stay to the bitter end .
