Play Offs Should They Be Scrapped.?

Which is a shame, because as Tsunami has posted, in another sport, the final stages of an end-of-season knockout competition fills the venue - not just for a match, but for a series of them over a weekend.

So what's the difference, the sport or the people currently following it?

Which is considered the most prestigious?

That is the key.

The title of "British Champions" sounds like that's the one they want to win.

In Rugby League you have a trophy for winning the league, but the reality is, the Grand Final (of the playoffs) is all that matters.

Well, that surely backs the argument to have separate play-off champions with a different trophy name - something more grand. The folks should still turn up and the team finishing top will still have the recognition for finishing as official League Champions.

If you called it " the best super duper championship in the whole wide world" people still wouldn't turn up because it is still meaningless.

So why does it work in ice hockey? The end-of-season play-offs aren't for the League Championship but folk still turn up in droves. That indicates to me that, if marketed right and given enough prestige, play-offs work even if the League Championship isn't on offer. So, I'll ask the question again, why do ice hockey fans turn out in their numbers to watch an end-of-season competition that doesn't have the League Championship at stake but speedway fans won't turn up unless the play-offs offer the League Championship as the reward?

Again, is it the sport or the people watching it?

I haven't followed ice hockey in years so I don't know how it's set up now, but the Wembley play-off weekend was treated by supporters in much the same way I would imagine the Cardiff GP is treated today. You went to be part of the occasion, it was an added bonus if your team happened to qualify.

Perhaps those who champion the play-off system can answer me this - if they had been introduced 10 years earlier, what benefits would the sport currently be reaping?

Like it or not the playoffs are here to stay. The big crowds at both legs of the final and in years gone by prove that the playoffs are a financial success and capture the imagination of the supporters. Even the riders seem to lift the intensity levels.

I do know that rugby league (super league) have a trophy for finishing top of the league (the something shield) would that be an option to reward the team finishing top of the league after the regular season? Name it after a prominent speedway character? The Neil Street Shield for example?

Or perhaps treat it like American Football where teams who finish the season with the best records get home field advantage and do away with two legged semi-finals and final?

Finally, I know it probably couldn't be done at this time of year because of other bookings, but I would lap up a Cardiff weekend for the playoff teams.

PLEASE keep domestic speedway on proper tracks!!

I've only glanced through this but two things to note is that more fans would turn up to a title decide whether is a play off or normal league match.

I thing that's happened over the last few years is riders, managers and fans have referred to meetings as being unimportant due to the placing they have all but secured in the "table". This has filtered through to the terraces and hit numbers attending.

Before the play off we had perennial no hopers who managed to maintain crowds due to wanting to finish as high up the table as possable or win bragging rights over their main rivals. There never seemed to be unimportant fixtures.

Knowing what we know now there should have been an imbargo on anybody within the sport describing fixtures in such a way as it a marketing disaster. Like wise the phase "I'm just testing engines tonight".

It's a genie we can't now put back in its bottle.
