Newcastle Announcement 27 September

Recommended Posts

What a doom and gloom merchant you are. As of tonight there would not have been a contract in place that allowed us to run speedway at Newcastle. The announcement was to inform, and confirm, that the promotion is prepared to run speedway at Brough, and with more favourable terms after some tough but fruitful negotiations. So it is changing despite your stupid comment.

With some of your 'shock' comments, I think your boss probably already thinks you are bonkers. Live in the real world, not the dark world.

This agreement was needed before any commitment could be made to the BSPA about us running, and informs riders that we are running and there will be team places to be offered. It also confirms to fans that have a team to watch next year, don't you wish Newport could say the same eh. This had to be step one before signings, league participation, and future plans could be formalised.

It may be not big news to you. but tough.

Why shouldn't there be. There has been rumours of not running posted on here, and other social media, so the announcement was to formally announce to those who are more important, and actually go to our speedway. To ignore it, some silly critics like you would possibly has said 'there should be some formal announcement'. So there has been, so you can move along now, nothing to see here.

Re-read my post. Maybe a couple of times. Then factor out it was me who posted it because my name is clearly like a red rag to a bull where you're concerned.

Cool, now that's done here comes the debate part.

The rumours of you not running picked up steam after the announcement that you were making an announcement at your last meeting was made. Why not just tell the public what's happening from day one? To get more people through the doors for a nothing match with Rye House of course, devious, snide? Quite smart actually in my opinion but obviously I'm criticising in yours.

If you've got some reasoned debates to comment on my posts with feel free but the mud slinging is getting a bit tiring now.

When George started his speech I thought here we go the track was closing down and I would have the unhappy job of adding a Newcastle Page to my http://www.defunctspeedway.co.uk website. But no! his flat voice lifted as he set about telling us that Wm Hill and Newspeed had agreed contract terms and that our often maligned promotion have secured the rights to run speedway here at Brough Park for another 5 yrs. Was I pleased? Yes you bet I am.

Now when George said the current promotion has had a 19 yr unbroken run, modesty prevented him from saying, he has been the only promoter involved in 18 yrs past. The other's in our promotion teams had/have been involved for less lengthy spells and George alone will come up for 19 years in 2016. Some promoters may have won more silverware but what good is that if they then closed down. The fans want to have a speedway to come to.

Other Promoters: -

Johnnie Hoskins

The "Father of Speedway" Johnnie S Hoskins is said by some to have invented speedway. Johnnie reopened Brough Park in 1938 and in 1939 with the Diamonds sitting pretty on top of the league the Germans invaded Poland and we closed down for the duration of WW2. With the war out of the way Johnnie was back at the helm from 1945-1948 Johnnie was in charge for a total of 6 yrs, so great as he was, he doesn't measure up to George English in my view.

Mike Parker

Mike re-opened Brough in 1961 and was in charge for 8 yrs before pulling the plug. Now I am old enough to regard the 1960s as special seasons with Ivan Mauger, Ole Olsen but clever as he was Mike Parker didn't care enough about Newcastle he moved on for business reasons. Mike Parker imo does not measure up to George English either. Mike brought us Ivan Mauger and Ole Olsen but both riders were a gamble which paid off he wasn't a good promoter just a successful one

Ian Thomas

Newcastle was closed 1971-1974 until Yorkshire Man Ian came along. His tenure ran from 1975-1984 9 years. We had the most successful spell ever under Ian's control but he hit financial problems and walked away. We had a stop start session from 1986 until George and Dave Rowland aka Tsunami came along and reopened the track in 1997. George has had a few different partners but after 18 yrs he has announced the speedway will continue in 2016.

So who is the most successful promoter Newcastle have ever had? My personal opinion he is George English, take a bow George

Excellent post.

As a paying customer, I take my hat off to the whole promotion including all those who provide their time voluntarily to prepare the track, look after the air fence, organise raffles, key draws, run the track shop, keep the weekly programme full of interest, maintain the website and online ticket purchases, promote the sport etc etc part of the behind the scenes team who make it possible for a poorly followed sport to be enjoyed by a small but dedicated fan base.

Last night's news was fantastic and made even better by the appearance of Lewis Kerr just to round off things perfectly!

is that it alec lewis one of the bookies that stand at brough told me that about a month ago i thought the breaking news was something like nec/diam sighen a rider of some standing or going elite .or nl in 2016, so that is old news to me

The final details of the deal were only finalised back end of last week, so your contact was a bit premature to tell others of the deal a month ago.

Supporting Rye House, you are not likely to now there has been great concern on the terraces for a couple of months that we could not go on like this and were likely to close. The conversations ran parallel to other rumours of other Northerly tracks, especially Berwick but for slightly different reasons. Fortunately with more recent local meetings, and the team performing brilliantly at home, there has been a significant increase in the crowds which has given a lot of encouragement and a much happier atmosphere. The deal has taken a long time with big concessions on both sides, and was believed to being finalised only last week. If as you and others have said, it brought in some dosh for the last meeting against your select team, so be it. It could of course not been agreed and signed, and announced after the season finished, but i do know that the promotion were determined to finalise the deal before the season finished, so they could give the good BIG news to those attending first hand before the season ended.

2 weeks more premature than when we announced, we had an announcement, that wasnt finalised then lol.

True it wasn't finalised then, so should not have been announced by the dogs side.

Just to add to that John. All the others you mentioned made a lot of money whilst at Brough, usually in halcyon days. When George and I opened Newcastle up in 1997, and since with other co-promoters, not one penny will have been made as profit, the intention was always to break even, or to keep the losses down to a personal manageable figure. That in itself is one hell of a performance in a sport with declining crowds.

As another paying customer/fan, I add my endorsement to everything that 'Aceslider' said. The financial juggling that must constantly take place just to keep the gates open must be a strain on everyone concerned. I took note of George's comment about the relatively small increase in support required to achieve break even point and I feel that we, as supporters owe it to the promotion to help as much as we can in that respect. Onward and upward for 2016!

Well said. I would have 'like this' but I have ran out of them this afternoon. :D

So the big news that required a pre-statement statement is that actually, nothing is changing. When will speedway people realise what constitutes big news?!

If I go into work tomorrow and tell my boss I has some big news to tell him and that i'll let him know in 2 weeks and then in 2 weeks time I tell him, "I'm not quitting" he'd think I'm bonkers, thats all this is!

I'm sorry that you feel that way SCB. To me the News truly is GREAT.

Rumours of closure were rife and I honestly thought it might happen. The fact that it hasn't is momentous News for me. I have a lot of friends who attend Newcastle Speedway and I sincerely hope that it continues running for many years to come, both for them and for myself. I still haven't given up hope that the ridiculous 'Tactical Ride' Rule may be scrapped and then I can return.

In the meantime I will continue to follow them on the sidelines - so to speak.

And a rousing cheer was made by us actually there, proving that it meant something to the 'real' Diamonds supporters.
