Ipswich 2016

Yeah I'm into formula 1 and touring cars. Anything with an engine really.Oh and darts. I shall also be watching some of the snooker over the next couple of weeks, and I don't mind a bit of female tennis either.

I remember going along to watch a British F1 GP at Brands Hatch back in the 70's (showing my age now) and seeing touring cars - or whatever they were called those days (saloon cars?) for the first time and there was a big, ordinary looking, guy called Gerry Marshall who drove a Vauxhall Firenza which they called 'Baby Bertha'. It was a big muscle car and was taken on by a little VW Golf and I couldn't understand how this little Golf was keeping pace with the Firenza, not realising at the time that there was a thing called a Golf GTi which went like stink. Even though the F1 racing was, in my opinion, far better then, it was the saloon car racing that grabbed my attention and I followed that around for a bit. Then I got into bike racing, Sheene, Roberts, Mamola, Rainey, Gardner, Doohan, then transferred my allegiance to Superbikes and loved the clashes between Fogarty and Aaron Slight, Haga and the Kawasaki green meanies. Still follow the Moto GPs and watch the touring cars on telly, but only when I remember they're on ITV 4, or wherever they lurk these days. Saloon/Touring car racing led to the purchase of the two best cars I owned, a 'W' reg VW Golf GTi (the only brand new car I ever bought) and a Seat Leon Sri, both great fun to drive and I had the Sri up to 134mph once - on a track day of course. With your interest in touring cars, Mr Louis will have to come up with something good to stop you being tempted away down to Braintree and along the A120 to watch the Team BMR Rye House Rocket & Raiders, especially now they have two former Witches and Robbo racing there.

Used to love the snooker and was hooked during the Steve Davis era. Romford, Romford, Romford and all that, but have lost interest now - too slow and not many characters about, apart from Ronnie. And loved watching the darts since the Bristow, Lowe, Wlson era. There was a great game between Wade and Lewis last week with Lewis hitting a 9 darter. I think I remember that the mayor of Ipswich declared at the start of the 80's that he wanted Ipswich to have half a dozen sports world champions, and the only one they achieved was Keith Deller in the darts in '83. Billy Sanders got pretty close in '83 too of course. Not many sports I don't enjoy (love my jumps racing) and even went and saw a wrestling match between Big Daddy and Kendo Nagasaki in Kent back in the 70's.

Now female tennis.... Maybe that should wait for another day... (I did get tickets to the beach volleyball at the London Olympics, but again that's another story).

Some interesting reading there, thank you. I have a couple of questions for ipswich fans or any fan really about their team.

But let me focus on ipswich.

Do we currently have a team that could win the league? And does it matter if we don't? Do we have a team that could reach the play offs? And does it matter if we don't? If we don't win anything or even reach the play offs, will you still turn up next year and let the hope start all again.?

That's one thing about speedway for me, whatever happens I will always go back and carry on watching.

If I had more money and more time I probably would go and watch rye house and probably Peterborough as well if money wasn't an option. I just love my speedway.Yes I know that makes me a bit of a strange one lol.

I tried a bit of speedway and grasstrack when I was younger and I sound found out my plumbs were not big enough to make it. Also done a bit of mini racing and go kart racing, and twice done the isle of mann tt.

Knowing me, I will probably still go next year even if we finish bottom of the league. At the moment, it is my health that is a bigger risk to my speedway going rather than our league capabilities.

I still get some of the buzz of years gone by and until that goes, I will continue to go if health allows. Can't say I get much of the socialising now though, too many old faces no longer go and my own little group has shrunk from 5 of us less than 5 years ago to most of the time, just me on my own.

Probably won't be there Saturday though, my birthday celebrations and at the moment, I am having trouble trying to convince a friend to do a speedway/gig double. He doesn't want to do the rushing about, I am willing but I need the lift to be able to do both!

Looking at the way Adam Ellis has started this year (Very well for Poole), why,oh, why did CL allow him to go??

just another rider that has improved AFTER leaving the Witches.....

King getting loads of flack by Coventry and Poole fans after last night.

think speedway maybe is not his priority at the moment?

Ok so we have moaned that we've only had two home meeting's so far this season , just read that they have cancelled yet more meeting at the new Bell Vue track . So we are short of a little dirt on our track at least we have a track that can be ridden .

From what i have been reading on the Elite Pages seems like they had to completely dig up bends 3 and 4 and start all over again . It seems they are still struggling to get it right. Below was posted on their website .

During the course of the remedial works being carried out by the stadium contractors to Turns Three and Four, further defects have been exposed which require further attention and this has extended the work program.

Belle Vue Speedway have therefore confirmed that their National League fixture against Coventry, which they were hoping to stage on Sunday April 24th, together with the Elite League meeting Belle Vue v Poole scheduled for Wednesday 27th April will not take place.

These meeting will be rescheduled. Further details will follow.

My pleasure Jenga, and good to know there's someone out there who knew what I was rambling on about and was around at the time to share the same enjoyed experiences. Good Times. Thanks for the reminder of the Sheene / Roberts 'wave' and the Lotus Cortinas. If I remember correctly, most of the F1 drivers at that time didn't just drive the F1 cars, they hopped into saloon cars, F2, F3, anything with a motor and four wheels. A few met their end due to this too, including the great (over used, but deserved) Jim Clark, when I was 11 and a half. Gee, I cried my eyes out when I heard the news of his passing.

Back to the Witches - is Paco in the last chance saloon tonight?
