Funny lot aren't they, those speedway star sellers. I do remember the deaf/mute man who used to come to Smallmead when Swindon were there selling pens & other bits & bobs. Was he a Swindon fan, or was it just coincidence he'd there when the Robins were visitors?

I think he was from Bristol and used to travel the country selling pens. he was a bald geezer with a bad attitude, always giving verbals to the punters. He was an easy target really. Kojak. Normally his verbals were good natured, but he was the cause of a mass punch up between the Oxford and Swindon teams one. Swindon won and were just coming out for a victory parade and he ran over and shut the pit gate on them. Next thing you know, mass brawl!

van wolfswinkel
I remember the guy who sold the pens, deaf and dumb fella, from memory he was called Oscar and travelled to many tracks selling the pens? Oscar was a legend at Eastville, Bristol Rovers home. Can remember one game when we were there with Millwall, the game was so boring the fans started chanting his name as he stood behind the goal on the dog-track! A ORLOV
he was a bald geezer with a bad attitude, always giving verbals to the punters. He was an easy target really. He would come round and wind the Robins fans up, especially if one of our top riders got beaten, and he would get stick when we beat one of theirs. It was great entertainment between the races. I do remember a lot of trouble when Bernard Crapper, the Oxford Manager refused the Robins a victory parade once, ah the good old days.
Reliant Robin
Don't forget, Terry Russell has been trying to sell his stake in Swindon for years. Maybe this would be a convenient get out clause and allow him to cash in his assets? This being the same Terry Russell who cleared a six figure debt towards the end of the 2013 Season?! Imagine that's more than cashing in the assets would be worth! If he'd wanted a convenient get out clause then it would have been cheaper to let the Club go under Edited September 15, 2015 by Reliant Robin

That's a fair point....which would also back up that it makes no sense to want to cash in the assets as was being suggested
Pirates Of Poole
With regards to using Oxford, has the stadium issues been resolved? haven't ready anything lately?
SteveLyric2
They can't build on it PoP! MF said in his recent BBC radio interview that there was a promoter already lined up to bring speedway back to Oxford - not sure at what level though!? Humphrey Appleby
Don't think so, the stadium will take about 5 months to build and should start early winter. And some people believe in pixies and fairies as well....
A ORLOV
What is an issue is that a really cold bad winter is predicted.
Reliant Robin
And some people believe in pixies and fairies as well.... I'm led to believe that the grandstand and buildings will be modular in which case a 4 month build is not out of the question. 5 months to complete a 4 month project with Christmas & New Year etc thrown into the mix would still be tight though! What is an issue is that a really cold bad winter is predicted. And this But I guess whatever happens it's still farewell to the Abbey....lets hope it is given a good send off
A ORLOV
They may have to revert to plan B and shorten the existing track so that the new one can be built across the corner of bend 1, as the plan was that dog racing has to continue and they can only demolish the existing one when the new one is ready.
