Swindon End Of Era Meeting.

This meeting originally had a theme of present team v past Swindon riders, plus as many of older ex Swindon riders will be presented, so if Crumpie is still in the country I would think he and his dad will be there.

4pm 150cc British Final

4.50 Robins remembered

5.00 Parade including many former Robins

Followed by 13 heat Swindon Select v Elite League Select, so not a past Swindon riders team.

Ending up with firework display.

Also something being showcased, details in this weeks Speedway Star.

I'm sure there'll be a few from Reading coming along too Buzz, had many a good night (and quite a few bad ones) at Blunsdump over the years.

Hard to believe the Racers final meeting was 7 years ago now! Was horrible walking out of the stadium for the last time that night. Hopefully there's a better outcome for the soon to be Swindon Cheetahs :D:P

I haven't got over walking out of Custom House for the last time  .

Fantastic news about Oxford Robins - only hope the racing is like it used to be at Cowley

Have I missed an announcement?

I'm very sorry to hear that Phil isn't too well. Total Legend.

Turn 4 at the new stadium needs to be called Crump Curve! He used to make such great use of the banking at the Abbey. How many matches did he win for us with a last bend burst of speed to pass a pi$$ing- themselves-because-they-knew-who-was-behind opponent! Back when Happiness Was... anybody....anybody??

Another amazing memory- Gordon Kennetts 21 point maximum in, if memory serves, 1980?. Totally invincible. Nobody would have touched him that night.

Not sure where Phil resides these days?? They mentioned on Sky on Monday that he was quite unwell so could be unlikely. Hope he recovers, my first memories of Speedway were watching the near unbeatable Phil Crump tear around the Abbey or contest the Bronze(?) Helmet.

I assume we can expect Zagar (although Al clearly upset him), Kornellieusen, North, Kennett, Nicholls, Allen?? Would love to see some GP types and maybe some guys from the past, be delighted to see Gjedde at Blunsdon again. Sooner the better in terms of starting to release the names.

Welcome back Odin.

Not sure we will see any of the names you mention, maybe North, possibly Nicholls.

Didn't Finn Thomsen score a hatful of points at the Abbey one year also? I thought it was around 20 points. Was rumoured to be on 'a big engine' during what was a rich vein of form for him I recall.

Favourite memories of the Abbey....the unique Blunsdon roar.....if the home straight had been covered similar to say Wimbourne Road, there would have been nothing to match it. Standing on the back straight, there are still occasions when it can be heard!

Controversial race...the unceremoniously dumping of Bob Kilby over the 4th bend fence by Ivan Mauger, racing for Exeter Falcons. Caused absolute uproar.

I remember Roman Jankowski getting a 21 point maximum for Hackney at reserve & I think a Swindon rider also scored a maximum as they didn't meet in the meeting. The week after Denis Sigalos dropped one point from reserve for Hull.

Wasn't that his first ever time at Swindon? '78 or '79 ish?

Yes both Jankowski & Sigalos were on their first visit to Swindon.

From memory I recall Sigalos was '79 and Jankowski 1980.

Sigalos' first season with Hull - I think he actually got 15 from 5 rides at reserve. Frank Auffret, Hull's other reserve, got 0 from 5. Both Hull reserves got 5 rides as one of the main 1-5 didn't show, and the match finished 39-39.

Jankowski got a paid max. but was in the team proper (not at reserve). A revitalised Hackney unexpectedly won 32-46 at Blunsdon, and then went on to finish 2nd in the league behind the Dave Lanning-inspired Reading Racers.

I'm not sure about the '2 maximums in one match' you suggested CR, but I do remember Ole Olsen and Jiri Stancl (at reserve) did this for opposing teams in a Reading v Coventry fixture, from the same era - Speedway Star had a regular feature that highlighted such statistical oddities.

Great to see the work Sam Ermolenko is putting in on the new engines.Well done - anything to keep him away from commentating!!! (Only joking!)

I am sure Sam can explain over the pa system what the advantages of the engines are, and if he should do so they have Gary Havelock on standby who knows about these engines to act as an interpreter.
