hagonshocker
El Tel is concerned about rumours etc but I believe he originally stated that the build was 4 months, something that most people new was not possible. Now it is 5 with a possible 6, which takes us past the start of the season. It would help to stop rumours if he explained what is the plan when the season starts and the stadium is not ready. Exactly the question i have asked....a positive answer i.e we carry on in the old Stadium til new build would certainly put minds at rest!...not a lot to ask is it?

The build is down as a 4 and a half month project. If it takes 6 months then as I understand Swindon are willing to commence their home fixture in Mid May and have more continuity in fixtures. The building part is modular....a completely different project type to Belle Vue and can go up a lot quicker.

SteveLyric2
All that fans want to know is if anything goes drastically wrong (bad weather, delayed plans/permissions/work etc), is there a Plan B and if so, what is it? It would be very unusual for TR not to have a fallback plan - even if its not Oxford?! Edited September 28, 2015 by Skidder1

remembertheracers
Does modular mean portakabins? There are plenty just inside the gate on turn one! We had them at Smallmead because it was built on a former refuse tip where the land had not settled. It does not sound like the start of art new stadium originally spoken of. Finally agree totally with all those who have seen enough of Mr Troy Batchelor. Edited September 29, 2015 by remembertheracers
Wackie
Even Smallmead with it's non-permanent buildings took longer than 4-5 months to build too!
KIRKYLANE
I hope Swindon get a big crowd for the last meeting. It was great yesterday to see such a large crowd at Belle Vue last night at our last meeting.
BuzzCagney
Even Smallmead with it's non-permanent buildings took longer than 4-5 months to build too! Come on, come on, we have enough Swindon fans doing the negativity thing. Behave yourselves! I'm sure it will be a huge crowd. There is a great deal of affection for the Abbey. My first meeting was a birthday treat when I was 7- so 1971! I was squeezed in the tight space behind the seats in a Frogeye Sprite for the drive up there! Looking at them years later I don't know how I got in! Through the 1970's I would go with my speedway mad brother on the bus. That was an adventure in itself! I started seriously going in 1979, so have many happy memories of the old place. Crowds so big they had to have turnstiles on the back straight. 10,000 for England v USA in, I think, 1980 or 81? John Davis (pretty girl whatever happened to her?!) getting upset because of the support the Yanks got! I sympathised as I recall! Hot dogs with onions from that shack on the back straight! Lovely! haha Best race? That's a hard one to answer. I'd say any that had Phil Crump in. The guy was just magnificent around Swindon. I know the track is a bitc.h to prepare but when it was in tip-top shape there aren't many better. Wackie
I'm sure there'll be a few from Reading coming along too Buzz, had many a good night (and quite a few bad ones) at Blunsdump over the years. Hard to believe the Racers final meeting was 7 years ago now! Was horrible walking out of the stadium for the last time that night. Hopefully there's a better outcome for the soon to be Swindon Cheetahs
BuzzCagney
or is it Oxford Robins?! Yep, I didn't do Reading's last meeting but I did feel more than sad when I left my last visit there just a few week before it ended, so I know the feeling you are taking about. I seem to only remember the kickings the Robins always got down there! Not a good hunting ground! Smallmead was my first ever away match. Season's opener in 1980. I remember my hero Bob Kilby having a great night. I think he only dropped 1 point. Of course Reading went on to have a brilliant year. Lanning and that £40,000 bet are legend!
RobMcCaffery
Even Smallmead with it's non-permanent buildings took longer than 4-5 months to build too! I have seen the original plans for Smallmead and you were supposed to get a far better stadium, but huge compromises had to be made to even fit that timetable. I expect the final meeting at Blunsdon will be an individual, but wouldn't it be great to have one final M4 derby with the Robins against Reading and Oxford, even if against select teams? One final chance for the three sets of supporters to enjoy the lost rivalry.... Edited September 29, 2015 by rmc
markyb
Fantastic news about Oxford Robins - only hope the racing is like it used to be at Cowley

One final chance for the three sets of supporters to enjoy the lost rivalry.... Swindon held a Reading/Oxford 3TT a couple of seasons back - not the same though, even with Matej in his old Racers kevlars. Probably not enough riders still actively racing who had association with the Racers or Cheetahs to put a team together for each now But this is Swindon's last meeting at the Abbey, and should be fully focused on the history of the club whilst it raced there. We had our end of era meeting and it was all about Reading, wouldn't of seemed right any other way.
A ORLOV
This meeting originally had a theme of present team v past Swindon riders, plus as many of older ex Swindon riders will be presented, so if Crumpie is still in the country I would think he and his dad will be there. Not sure where Phil resides these days?? They mentioned on Sky on Monday that he was quite unwell so could be unlikely. Hope he recovers, my first memories of Speedway were watching the near unbeatable Phil Crump tear around the Abbey or contest the Bronze(?) Helmet. I assume we can expect Zagar (although Al clearly upset him), Kornellieusen, North, Kennett, Nicholls, Allen?? Would love to see some GP types and maybe some guys from the past, be delighted to see Gjedde at Blunsdon again. Sooner the better in terms of starting to release the names.

A ORLOV
Phil is currently not too well back in Oz. Prostate cancer I believe. That is a shame, the last time I spoke to Jason Phil was living in the uk.
SteveLyric2
You may well be right about the UK. I assumed it was Oz. There was something about it in a recent Speedway Star. Edit: In fact it was in last week's Star - "Phil is currently hospitalised following a prostate operation"!
