Leicester Lions 2016

Whatever one chooses to believe or not believe about the reasons for the track changes, the good news has to be that this investment wouldn't be made unless the promotion and sponsors were confident of a long term future for the track. Despite the clouds of doom hanging over the sport there is money invested at Leicester , a new stadium at Belle Vue , progress (apparently) at Swindon, big money going in from the new promotion at Glasgow, a new promotion taking over at Rye House, a well funded private team sponsoring Lewis Kerr, are just a few signs the some believe there is life in the old sport yet and are prepared to put their money where there mouth is. That doesn't mean the future is rosy, far from in fact, but it does suggest the sport is not yet on its death rattle, as the doom and gloom merchants who pollute the forum would have us believe.

Having followed the discussion about changes to the track and how the circuit at Beaumont Park compares to the one at Blackbird Road I have been digging into Alan Jones' History of Speedway in Leicester and have discovered that the size of the track was changed 5 times after it was originally laid out at 348 yards (356 metres) in 1928. In 1930 it was increased to 353 yds. (361m)and in 1937 it was increased to 360 yds. (368m). When the track re-opened after the war in 1949 it was increased to 382 yds. (391m) and then in May that year reduced to 364 yds. (372 m). In 1951 it was increased to 380 yds. (389m) at which distance it remained until the stadium closed in 1983.

Think you may be confusing your burtons & Howard's.

Yes, you're right. Sorry. I'm referring to Dave Burton who I believe is one of the car park stewards but I can't check the 'Secret Group' which Dave it was as the post seems to have disappeared now. Perhaps the secret group is going to be even more secret and only season ticket holders will be told about it.

The track has also done another thing it has turned people's attention away from in my view a bigger problem who is going to be Leicesters number 1&2 riders in 2016.

Wouldn't be surprised if thats 1 & 4 or 5 riders. Can't realistically see us adding two names that will be more succesful in heat leader role than Walasek. Think Im anticipating Wozniak being a heat leader either at the start of the season, or pretty soon after it

Thought you had enough points left for 2 heat leaders?

I'm assuming that Walasek would start as 3rd heat leader and Wozniak 2nd string?

If You can't find a rider higher than Wozniak for one of those roles it's going to be another long season ahead!

If the season ticket holders are going to have secret perks how on earth are potential season ticket holders going to find out what they are without the management telling people on their website or Facebook pages? Also perhaps a nice kind season ticket holder might come on here and tell us what the perks are so that we can all have a good laugh!

Oh we have plenty of points left. probably enough to fit Emil and Hancock even... but just because we can, doesnt mean we will. Not that many riders left that fit the bill as heat leaders and are available/willing to ride in the elite league. Kenni Larsen is a name thats been banded about by a few on here for a few different clubs... wonder if he might be an option. Sundstrom possibly too?

Hopefully it will be someone like both Larsen and Sundstrom.

Ok, so Blackbirds Rd, compared to Beaumont Park.

Old days, 7.30 or 7.45pm start, 13 races (main meeting) a track grade after every race, then interval, then 7/8 race second half.. then the learners until lights out.. approx 22.00/22.15hrs

Now, 7.30 start, 15 race main meeting, a track grade after heats 4, 7, 10 & 14 (usually) inc a 10/15 minute interval after heat 10, (weather permitting) Then a substantial track grade so the MDL riders get a reasonable surface to race on (6 race match) usually riders with 2 on trott, & Thompson Twins have a couple of races between races in the MDL match, so in total 23/24 races in total.. all done by 22.00/22.15hrs

What's it like elsewhere?

Don't forget the 1 hour sun delay

Would love it. Would make the Lions a very competitive team too. Whether or not either (let alone both) would be available for a saturday night track (and how often we'd lose them to SEC/ SGP qualifiers etc) remains to be seen

Larsen may be involved in the SGP and SEC qualifiers? Would almost certainly miss a few home meetings if that's the case. Having said that id still sign him if there was any chance.

My exact thoughts. If he's willing to ride in qualifiers and SEC, it shows a willingness to race on a saturday night. Id rather have a quality rider like larsen available most of the time, but needing R/R a few meetings, than a bang average rider there for all meetings
