Is speedway a £10 sport ?.....what do people reckon.

My local football team , Curzon Ashton, have been promoted to the National League North...a couple of rungs outside League 2 and they charge £10 for an adult and £3 for pensioners, students and under 16's......but their players won't earn what a top speedway rider earns.....so can speedway survive as a £10 sport ...I doubt it could as it is and pay the riders ......it would have to become a virtual amateur sport with riders doing it as a hobby and stadium rents would still have to be paid.

So a £10 sport would reduce wages paid to riders but the rents would be the same and would attendances increase a lot ?......I don't know

You have got the cost of riders and the cost of entry the wrong way around. My boss pays me £x based on the fact I earn him £y he didn't find me, pay me and then charge the customer based on what I earn. So why the hell do you think speedway should work that way? If people only want to pay £10 then costs should be cut so the product is a £10 product, if that means riders take a 30% pay cut then thats how it has to be done.

I was talking to my friend last night - and I just wonder if Speedway is one of those things that has had it's day with the General Public.

I sincerely hope that is not the case - but falling Crowds tend to point that way.

I don't necessarily think making Speedway cheaper is the right way to go.

How about giving the Paying Public a bit more for their money than they get at present. Value for money, for me, is the thing. Sadly too many people in Speedway take their Support(ers) for granted. There's your fifteen Heats - that's it - now go away and come back next week. That after standing, sometimes in the freezing cold, for over two hours.

Slicker Presentation with, perhaps, a local Jazz Band, Regiment of Soldiers marching, a Military Band perhaps(maybe too expensive - I don't know). Local youngsters showing off Cycle Speedway etc.. There are lots of things that could be done to keep folk interested.

Just a few thoughts anyway - I suppose I will be shot down in flames for talking rubbish.

Does F1 pay the drivers in proportion to the income generated from attendances?

Speedway clearly doesn't and without sponsorship it just couldn't exist in its current format.

Of course that begs the question, could speedway become a £10 sport if it attracted more sponsorship?

I've had two projects ongoing for a few years and I did consider some speedway sponsorship, without giving anything away I broached the subject with a couple of riders and other people involved, how much for wearing a cap with a logo on for example and I got the impression that it was too much trouble so I've never bothered. I also know someone who approached Belle Vue six years or so ago and offered to canvass for sponsorship while he was working as a (successful) sales rep, nothing came back.

Not sure if any of that is relevant to the thread.

Ohhh!!

I think it is.

It might help if the BBC gave speedway its own section on the website instead of being lumped under motorsport, Shooting and Taekwondo get their own section.

It might help if they showed some bloody Speedway.

i was at poole last night. A really big crowd turned up with plenty of youngsters present. It was an excellent hard fought match with some fast and furious racing. The whole meeting was done and dusted within 90 minutes, my idea of speedway heaven!

IT is all too easy to lose sight of the fact that the product can still be very good. And when it is (recent Swedish league match between Vetlanda and Indianarna was top drawer) it is as good as anything else).

And last night's meeting at Poole included no guests or even r/r.

I am constantly hectoring John Shires, sports editor of ITV Regional News in Yorkshire. His last comment to me was "If Tai Woffinden wins the World Championship again I'll do a feature"..

Well, thank you John!.

And the BBC and ITV will still not bother. I find it a tad ironic the BBC can pen an in depth article like this when they themselves have ignored speedway for decades.

There is some irony that the fan quoted as saying it is a £10 sport is quite well known for blagging lifts to matches and seeking free entry. £10 would be a bit of an increase for him.

Going off at a total tangent now, in true BSF style, I saw a match at Curzon Ashton 3 years ago and remember thinking how good it would be if we had speedway stadia of that standard in the country. Clean, great seated grandstand, good car parking facility, reasonably priced food and drink and statues in the car park. No doubt council owned but as a blueprint it would be a great design for speedway stadia.

Shires has a town called Scunthorpe firmly in his editorial area so Tai is a local story. He has no excuse.

Seeing the amounts of references to East Anglia I'd say this is either from BBC East in Norwich or BBC Radio Suffolk in Ipswich. The attitude in certain regions is much more positive than in the national BBC Sport service in Salford.

Not seen Noddy in ages! I remember pulling into the car park at Vetlanda for the Intercontinental Final in 1982 saying to the driver "Well, this is one place we won't see Noddy." One look at the guy guiding the car parking proved me wrong....

I attended my first three meetings this season last week, two at Belle Vue and one at Sheffield. For what it's worth, I thought the crowds were better than on my last visit to those tracks which probably reflects the improved performances of the two teams. Perhaps Ipswich's struggles this season are reflecting in their attendances? Two of the meetings I saw were delayed due to weather and injury but the other meeting proceeded at a very leisurely pace. I'm sure better, sharper presentation would help crowd levels. Is speedway a £10 sport? No, unless it's at NL level. Any decent level sport is expensive to watch these days. Tickets for my local Championship level football club are £27 so £17.50 for EL speedway doesn't seem so bad.
