Scunthorpe: Best Speedway Racing In The Uk?

Recommended Posts

Ok, as a neutral, if fans go for good racing over a dominant winning team, why oh why are Scunthorpe "on the brink" of not running next season due to poor home crowds?

This is a genuine question, looking for genuine answers/theories as to why this is the situation.......

Scunthorpe is a relatively small town, it's been through the mill several times... Lack of major investment and jobs throughout the years, people simply haven't got the money....unless you're one of the few steelworkers left employed in the town. Shame to say it as its my home town, but Scunthorpe is a fairly deprived northern outpost. Recent years has however seen the population swell. It's quite a multicultural town thesedays, thousands upon thousands, mainly Eastern Europeans descended upon us....but try as we might, they ain't interested in speedway. It's not just speedway that struggles for crowds, you've only got to look at the football team...huge investment inplace at the moment, new stadium about to be built, plenty money spent on the team, 1st division club...crowds struggling around the 4000 mark.

There is no doubt in my mind the racing at Scunny is as good as you'll find anywhere in this county, it would be a travesty if it is lost to the sport. Scunthorpe speedway has many advantages that other clubs don't enjoy ie, training schools, practices, amateur scene, no curfew, it owns the bar, the cafe...and the land is leased off the council, it's not being fleeced by eg, a greyhound company. Factor in the revenue from those and then compare that to other clubs expenditures, I'm sure there's likely to be other clubs with similar financial worries. Perhaps given Scunnys incoming revenues, a lower attendance level can be tolerated...trouble is we've probably dipped below what the promotion now consider a tolerable level.

It's hard to attract new supporters, but we are trying and we'll keep on trying to the end. We are seeing a few new supporters coming in, people are always introducing newbies....we need to look after these and hope they too can spread the word. The promotion are also trying, the product is brilliant, it deserves to be better supported.

Genuine question and a very good one....but with a very simple answer.

Neutrals like you and I go for the racing, home fans put winning before

That. Few home defeats and they are gone into the night.

Scunny lost 5 of their first 6. That's why they might close.
