Berwick 2016

Recommended Posts

Berwick`s looked to be holding up reasonably well but there seemed to be a drop off for the meetings with Newcastle and then Sheffield last week, which must be a worry as they are attractive opposition. Losing at home doesn't help, lets hope tomorrows practice find the answers to rectify that, and everything is looked at to get the team back winning.

Attendance figures throughout the sport are down, give or take the odd track, but if you look at youtube videos of Shielfield even ten or so years ago, I wouldn't say Berwick's crowds were much bigger then. But these days income can come in different forms, more emphasis is given to sponsorship deals and corporate hospitality. The holiday season is coming up soon and that is when the population of Berwick expands greatly. That's where I think the club need to target the promotion of the sport in the town.

As for inviting all previous Berwick riders, yes this is good PR and should give the club an opportunity to expand the awareness of the club by getting photos, interviews etc. of theses riders into newspapers, the club website, social media.

As usual we rely on the fixtures against Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Workington and maybe Redcar for decent crowds. Despite being a Saturday track the days of bus loads of fans coming from other track's apart from the one's I have mentioned seems to have died the death. Hard at times to gauge the Berwick crowds as lot's of stadiums I have visited often have 1 area where fan's congregate where we have 2 stands plus people stand on the bend's as well. Hopefully as weather improves and holiday season comes along we might get a few extra through the turnstiles.

there was a fair contingent of Sheffield fans there on Sat

Attendance figures are never published so how do you know out of interest?

Probably by going to the said tracks, opening his eyes and seeing gaps on the terraces that weren't there before?

So do I but his track record tells me he probably won't.

Having an inconsistent No1 is of no good to Berwick, but Alden certainly has it in him to win the vital races in a meeting, just hope he can do it on a regular bases. I think getting the No1 race jacket was one of Seb`s ambitions at the start of the season so an ambition realised.

Alden is still 2nd in Berwick averages...

According to bspa website??

Alden started the season on an assessed average (no me neither), should he score 4pts or more at our next meeting at Sheffield he would then have done 4 home and 4 away meeting, and qualify for a true average which will see him as our new No1.

At Berwick the big stadium and small crowd you could count them if you were that way inclined, most tracks I have attended regular in recent season certain have smaller attendances than previous .Imo

It's pretty obvious to regulars. Attendances look up on last year at Rye. We haven't faced a Northern team yet, so have had the benefit of travelling support. Out of interest Ben, why did you stop attending?

Like you say official figures are never published, I'm purely going on what I've seen on Sky TV and wheat you read in Speedway Star, or on here. It would be interesting to see the actual numbers.

The size of Shielfield and the fact that the crowd are spread out round three quarters of the track I think makes the crowd look deceptively small at Berwick. You look at places like Wolverhampton and Newcastle, greyhound stadiums where the crowd are restricted to one area and the crowd looks bigger, but if you put all the fans into one area of Shielfield, I reckon it would be more comparable.

Providing Seb scores 4 points or more on Thursday he goes to no 1 and Matty moves into top 5 then we have super reserve Henning :cry::cry:

Simple to do, get a block of people into your mind say 25 or 50 and simply block count, you will be within 5 %to 10% of heads. The difficulty at Berwick is assessing how many kids are in that count who get in for free, a good thing for the future, but it reduces your paying customer by about 20/25% on the night. I would say that the crowds are not significantly up this season, ands certainly not in the last 2 meetings, the clubs strength this season has been the corporate side, it is noticable the amount of advertising banners compared to previous seasons, and also the hospitality is well up on last season ,

Poor teams put out for years, seemingly no effort to rectify that, I could go on. No student prices made it a struggle for me when I was studying and that period of not attending regularly because funds wouldn't allow it was when I began to lose my passion for attending. A few years of letting me in at a more reasonable rate for my level of income and Rye House could have an extra weekly full paying adult now.

Once you walk away for a few weeks it's easy to stay away and I never thought I'd feel that way about speedway. For the amount of entertainment you get, roughly 15 minutes, it's a waste of money and to be perfectly honest a weekend evening doesn't fit in with my social life any more, it was a different story when I was at school and couldn't go out drinking. There are so many things to do on a weekend evening that are better value for money than speedway these days.

I'm probably going to the Edinburgh meeting on Sunday, purely because I want to see Dan Bewley.

Apologies for the tangent on a Berwick thread!
