Berwick 2016

Recommended Posts

Maybe I am being totally naive here, but I always thought a rider supplied his own machinery. I know promoters will try and get sponsorship to help riders fund machinery, but should it be up to promoters to buy the riders their machinery?

in most cases in PL, yes, but Barker got bikes through his contract

Saturday was a really good night, 150 plus diehard Berwick Bandits fans under one roof. This was a good opportunity for the Promotion of the club, or a representative, to come along and explain to those attending what is happening in 2016, epecially after so much uncertainty generated by the club. More importantly a golden opportunity to build bridges with the BSSC, who have never wavered in their support of helping speedway at Berwick.

I'm not on facebook, e-mail lists etc but I was told Kevin being rider of the year was on the Berwick speedway facebook page. Maybe this is a start to "rebuild bridges". :drink:

Forgive me if I have misunderstood anything here, but was there not a statement from the supporters' club early last seasons that their aim was to support riders?

I could be wrong.

The only reason I am asking is another sports supporters club that I am a member of explicitly passes all funds directly to the club.

Maybe there is some confusion with either their communication, or their title?

would still take him back if on bikes similar to the ones Peterborough gave him instead of the mopeds that big John gave him

Ben PAID for his bikes, he was given nothing.

Wrong. bikes were made available to him, but he paid for them. I am pretty sure that he off loaded the Steen Jensen bikes pretty quick, engines were shot and he sold the frames. He bought another bike with the funds raised.

Perhaps you could explain how another sports deals with its finances has got to do with this thread?

Berwick Speedway Supporters Club (BSSC)

The above, supports speedway in Berwick in accordance with their constitution, it's main aim is to support speedway in any way they feel is approriate, and is fully independant in it's decisions.

Just a point of interest since the absence of promoters at the even has been brought up. I always thought the organisation was to support riders, and to help fans travel to away meetings. Based on that understanding, I wouldn't have expected the promotion to feel obliged to attend: at least in a formal capacity.

With reference to the other club (not sports as I have no idea how any other clubs or sports work with this), we raise funds 100% for the club, not the players.

Neither way is right or wrong, I'm merely making an observation which pertains to the discussion.

Thank you Taffy.

That makes it different, if they do financially support the club, then one would expect a representative in a formal capacity.

Good to hear that they have done that through such testing times :approve:

No, I was just joining the discussion.

I thought it was unfair to expect formal representation, however, since they financially supported the club then it was not an unreasonable assumption.

I stand corrected, as the man in orthopaedic shoes once said.

That sounds great. Except they don't support the need to have speedway, they give their money to the riders and arrange parties and away trips. All good, obviously. But a club such as this should be aware that, if the club goes to the wall, their funding of such projects are useless.

The Berwick Supporters Club were superb in their help to the promotion AND riders between 2018 and late 2014. What happened?

The BBSC does not have the funds that they used to have anymore due to the speedway Club taking it all as well as all of the things that the club had allowed the BBSC to do on a Saturday night

I think this particular poster that you choose to answer knows only to well. IMO you only need to ask last years riders, both PL and juniors as to the great work the supporters club did last season.

Which in its own way is helping out the promotion, as in theory the more help riders are getting to help fund their equipment, travelling etc, then the less demands made to promotion in pay rates. So it should be a win win situation. The promotion needs the supporters club, the supporters club need the promotion, so the more they work together the better the situation will become.

I probably am, as I have no first hand experience of the relationship between promoters / riders regarding pay and expenses. But I was basing it on what I was told a few year ago by somebody close to another Premier League promoter. I was told that he (the promoter) used to save a lot of money by setting riders up with sponsorship deals to cover their costs, thus pushing down their pay rates.
